So I was lucky about 2 weeks ago to walk into my local thrift store and see this vintage Barbie sitting on the shelf - for $1. I believe she is one of the original pony tail Barbies...possibly a #4. She does not have the metal holes in the bottom of the feet, and the stamp on her butt is kinda smudged and blurry so I can't really read it. She has the painted finger and toenails and has a very heavy dense weight. She has holes where the earrings use to be, but this is how I found her. I would like some suggestions on which Barbie this is, and if there is any way I can get her fixed back up. I would love to add her to my Vintage toy collection but also need to know what her original outfit was (if it is the black/white bathing suit) and how else I can restore her. As you can see she is dirty, her (original) hair is kinda messy, and she has dirt. The bottom of her left leg is kinda bent too (probably from being in a toy box for the last 40+ years). Any info would be greatly appreciated!!

Turning the corner to the Chinatown Metro in NW DC, just after taking my #06 Stranger portrait, I walked past Brother Edward X selling the Final Call. Bro. Edward caught my attention for two reasons, 1) I'm curious about the story of the Nation of Islam in DC, and 2) He had the classic paperboy look while he was selling newspapers.

The conversation was short, but I asked him about the size of the Nation here in DC, to which he replied about 200. For those of you who don't know, the Nation of Islam is a black nationalist islamic movement based out of Chicago, which is headed by Louis Farrakan, a sometimes controversial public figure. In the 80's, the Nation experienced a resurgence in popularity, which creeped into black popular culture in artforms such as hip-hop music and movies.

Looking back, the Nation's rise in popularity in the 80's, which was a very difficult decade for many black people, seems obvious. And, their increased presence today, at a time in our history that parallels the hard times of the 80's in so many ways, comes as no surprise to me even after the election of our first black president. Maybe, it's an urban phenomenon that escaped me because I don't come from a large city? I don't know, but I doubt it. The cleavages of class and race in DC are sharp, and the large population of inhabitants of this city live on the margins; in our nation's capitol. All you have to do is visit the other three quadrants of the city to see what I'm talking about (NE, SE, and SW).

So, I chose black and white for this image because the Nation tends to view things as black and white. This is not a critique of the Nation, but a thank you to Bro. Edward X for the conversation and the portrait. I'm still on my quest to have my questions answered, and this may one day happen with the assistance of my camera. This project has taken me out of my comfort zone, while taking me into the lives of a cross-section of DC residents that I seldom interact with, if only for a few minutes.

Do you think I look like Lady GaGa?

So I have been tagged by the lovely fre_natae to write 10 things about myself. I have done this before so I am finding this a bit difficult to not repeat some of them. So here goes...

1. I prefer sleeping in the buff to wearing clothing of any kind.

2. I prefer showers to baths.

3. I am scared of heights but have Bungee Jumped 3 times

4. I have always considered my friends to be my family

5. My favourite lunchtime meal is Grilled Cheese Sandwiches and Tomato soup

6. I was born without a biological clock and therefore have no desire to give birth

7. I always cheer for the underdog because in most cases I am the underdog

8. I prefer to not play on sports teams where not one specific person can be a star, which is why I like Dragon Boating.

9. I am not a natural athlete

10. This is my first Square Portrait.

So there you have it...I might come back and change some of these when I can think of better and more interesting things to share about myself... :)

Again Picnik-ed! I had to cuff the bottom of these pants so they would fit right. Being that I am only 5'1 I had to option to either get them hemmed or just make do. I figured since they were skinny legs that I could just simply cuff them on the inside and Voila! Success!

Bishop Olmsted ordains diocese’s newest priest

By Ambria Hammel | June 2, 2012 | The Catholic Sun

Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted ordained Dan Vanyo to the priesthood June 2 at Ss. Simon and Jude Cathedral.

He joins 254 diocesan and religious priests who serve the Phoenix Diocese by offering the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, conferring the sacraments and overseeing aspects of parish life. Many of them were on hand to offer congratulations to their newest brother.

That included a handful of local priests and some from St. John Vianney Theological Seminary in Denver who played key roles in Fr. Vanyo’s discernment. Fr. Vanyo, 43, began discerning his call to the priesthood at age 32 when a friend through a local Catholic singles group was discerning religious life.

“I never discerned anything,” Fr. Vanyo said. He researched some religious orders, but it wasn’t until a day for prospective diocesan seminarians that he reached a peaceful conclusion.

“They need help here,” Fr. Vanyo, then a hospice nurse, recalled thinking. “That’s when I gave the Lord my fiat. If you open the door, I’ll walk through it.”

He ran into Fr. Chauncey Winkler, who he knew from the local Catholic Retreat for Young Singles group and told him, “I think this is where I could be of some help.”

He entered the seminary in 2005 and was among a reported 487 ordinands nationally who will join the ranks of priesthood this year. Bishop Olmsted read from the Ordination Rite during Mass.

He reminded the crowd, including family and friends who filled the first row on both sides, that Jesus chose certain disciples to carry out publicly in His name, a priestly office. He reminded the diocese’s newest priest of his roles of Christ the teacher, priest and shepherd.

“Carry out the ministry of Christ the priest with constant joy and love,” the bishop said. He also challenged Fr. Vanyo to bring the people together in one family. That’s a challenge the priest plans to meet in his new home, Queen of Peace Parish in Mesa. He will serve as parochial vicar starting July 1.

“I am most excited that I will be able to hear people’s confessions. When the Holy Spirit touches the hearts of the penitents with His grace in the confessional, I will be blessed to be a witness to it,” Fr. Vanyo said.

In addition to a parish presence, Fr. Vanyo will serve as chaplain at Seton Catholic Preparatory High School in Chandler. Fr. Vanyo will offer his first liturgy, a Mass of Thanksgiving, at his home parish Holy Cross in Mesa, at 10 a.m. June 3.

Visit to Manchester Christmas markets #3a Streets and buildings 1

I took all my posts for today and tomorrow as I walked from Piccadilly Gardens, past St Peter’s Square and headed, in a rambling kind of way towards Deansgate and St Anne’s Square via King Street. From St Anne’s Square I walked towards the Marks and Spencer Store at the junction pf Market Street and New Cathedral Street, beyond which I took the last photo in today’s post - Shambles square. The photographs got a little out of sequence during the culling, post-processing and categorising work, but they all belong to that section of my walk as described above.

I really do like this because it looks so much like the 'Heroes' poster from series 1! I think it does anyways..

3. I want to became pregnant

4. I don't eat meat, fish, eggs, milk, butter , animal - just cheese... lots of cheese

7. Fears: sickness, spiders and thunderstorms

8. One day we're gonna get our own store André(Lords of Dames), i promise

9. I Love PINK...everybody knows and noticed

1. I'm 30 and married, no kidlets. I really want to adopt a Korean little girl eventually.

2. I'm currently in the US Army, living in Korea.

3. I was named after one of the original Charlie's Angels characters, because my mom thought she was pretty (and had dark hair too)

4. I've spent most of my life in New Orleans, but now my home is in northern Virginia, near DC.

5. I'm trying to learn how to read Korean, but it all looks the same right now.

6. I'm super insecure about my weight, but too bummed out to do anything about it. (the photo above is old, from when I was a size 2-4)

7. Living in a barracks room really makes me appreciate my new townhouse in Virginia.

8. I have been married to Mason for almost 3 years. He is a 'beltway bandit' and works for the federal government.

9. I consider myself to be agnostic, but I do believe in Karma. I think that if people are just nicer and more considerate to each other, the world would be a little better.

10. I'm desperately trying to convince my hubby that having a pet duck makes sense. Problem is that we have no yard and our HOA says 'no poultry' (but they are waterfowl, right?) So our next house must have a yard to accomodate a ducky or 2.

11. I'm a super picky eater, and get very anxious when I have to eat at other people's houses. I try to avoid those situations.

12. I am a moderate Democrat, and proudly voted for Obama. I am not a close-minded asshole that thinks everyone else is wrong. This country is based on freedom of thought, and that's how it should be. At least, it makes for interesting dinner conversations sometimes!

13. I have OCD where I can't stop messing with my fingers, especially at night. Verrrry annoying. Crap, its starting to do it now...

14. Hubby and I are financially stable, and it feels damn good.

15. I have vision problems which aren't caused by my eyes. I'm scared about having to go to a neurologist to find out what is wrong.

16. I'm kind of a lone ranger when it comes to work. Give me a dark cubicle in a corner and leave me alone, I'm happy.

Before taking the T189 OU photographic course I had only taken family photos on a compact camera. This short 10 week course was the first time I had used a DSLR. Prior to this the only photo editing I had done was a bit of cropping and adjusting brightness and contrast, I had never used Photoshop before.

I passed the ECA with 95% (mark for the CMA was 98%):

Part 1 Visual Awareness: Outstanding

Part 1 Technical Quality : Excellent

Part 2 Written Component: Excellent

Comments were:

Part 1 (i) Visual Awareness - An excellent set of images my favourite of which is the Teddy Bears as I love the warm bright yellow against the grey monochrome of the other bears. An excellent and well thought out choice of colour and mono mix.

I think the scrabble picture is "inspired" and amusing excellent demonstration of using differential focus and choosing the right point of sharpest focus

I appreciated your comparison and contrast of the two pictures of the landscape with cool colours which is a peaceful landscape with an added bonus of the well placed house and the drama and vibrancy of the colours in No.7.

I like your triple image the three different colours used maked a picture which has impact out of a fairly simple subject. Good composition and use of reflections on No.4. The jumping boy image has impact as does the simple image of the bottle. The simple image of the swans head shows a different type of "seeing" to the complex image of the Honeysuckle which for me is one of your best images and the work that you put into it was worth the effort.

Part 1 (ii) Techinical Quality - The techniques used on No.8 and 9 work really well and make a simple subject into something quite different and satisfying.

Your technical standard is generally very good and use of clone tool and other tools shows you are mastering Digital Darkroom techniques.

As the strongest highlight draws the eye I would darken down the right side of the sky in No.5 and carefully lighten or brighten the house to make it stand out as the strongest highlight.

Well done Jill - keep taking the pictures and exploring techniques and subject matter, most of all enjoy your photography.

Bacon-wrapped Spring Lamb's Lung

Bacon-wrapped with sage and orange rind. Based on Mario Batali's recipe for liver and fig vinaigrette in his cookbook "The Babbo Cookbook".

Notes: Clearly, recipes are to be followed and not guessed at. Neither Fergus Henderson or any other cookbook we had offered a recipe for lungs. The internet, however, was a wealth of information. Nearly every recipe we looked at called for a long braise.

When we looked at the lungs, we were shocked. They looked nothing like we'd thought. They looked just like liver. So, we decided to cook them just like liver. We used a recipe out of the Babbo Cookbook, which called for wrapping the liver (lungs) in caul fat with sage and orange peel and pan frying them.

We didn't have any caul fat, so we used bacon instead. When we put the lungs in the pan (after cutting out the main vein, the meat immediately tensed and swelled. After the bacon was nice and crisp, we took it off the pan and let it rest.

Well, lungs are not to be pan-fried. They were completely inedible. They were still raw in the middle and terribly tough to cut through. I only got to try one little corner bit that was very well charred and cooked. The texture was very very very tough and gristly. The flavor, however was spectacular - except I'm pretty sure it was the sage and orange combination, which, done with liver, would have been fantastic. In fact, my friend made a mental note to cook with sage and orang peel in the future.

At least now I can say that I've had lung...

I've had the Celtic Tote on my Ravelry queue for ages and finally decided to give it a go. Learnt a number of things:

1. I have real difficulty reading charts. I lose my place, forget what the symbols mean and eventually I had to write each line out and follow it that way!

2. Read ahead before you dive into the pattern, that way I would have avoided missing two cast offs at the bag edge that I later had to go back to and cut pieces out of and sew back together to fix!

3. Cables really aren't that difficult, just a bit fiddly sometimes.

I had some green wool that was a bit on the scratchy side for clothes and I thought a little on the thin side for the bag so holding two strands together I embarked on the adventure! It knit up pretty quickly too. I used some handspun dark brown wool to outline the cables and then set to and sewed the whole beastie together!

Much heartened by the magnificance of it all I then popped it into the wash and prayed it wouldn't come out the size of a coin purse!

Of course it didn't and once it was dry I raided my fabric stash, found a really nice bright olive cotton and hey presto! we have a lined felted bag with intricate (well, for me it was!) cables on both sides and the strap. I am brilliant!!

It was previously used by the tactical support group who's vans differed to a normal PSU, mainly due to the lack of cells in them. At the time of the shot, 6 brand new Mercedes-Benz Sprinters were entering service, or had very recently entered service with the tactical support group in an impressive dark blue livery.

Dr. Truman Madsen is a noted LDS scholar, as is his wife Ann; and both of them are terrific human beings as well. Their son Barney and daughter-in-law Cindy have for more than 25 years ranked among my most intimate friends, so much so that I have become sort of a quasi-member of the Madsen clan. I regard this as a unique and treasured privilege, and it gives me entree with a high-caliber and deeply spiritual group of people.

The Madsens, presided over by Truman himself, have the tradition of getting together on Sunday evenings at the conclusion of General Conference to discuss their impressions of the semiannual event, which takes place in April and October and constitutes a crucial part of the calendar of all faithful Mormons. For several years, I have been privileged to take part in these gatherings, either in person when I have been in Utah or over the phone when I've been in Arizona. For both Conferences in 2005, I was physically present for the Sunday-evening get-together.

This picture, along with several others, was taken in Dr. Madsen's home in Provo, Utah, just prior to the priesthood session of Conference on Saturday, October 1. I have always been respectful of the Madsens' privacy, but Truman graciously gave me permission to post these pictures on Flickr. They reveal much about the kind of man he is, as well as the kind of family he and Ann have raised. Speaking for myself, I think they did a magnificent job.

This picture is a sampling of Truman's extensive library, which, as a lover of books in general and scholarly religious texts in particular, I admire and envy. As you can see, he puts his books to good use. They are arranged throughout the large study according to topic.

NIF

stuff:

1 - I should sew. I just got new fabrics, so I should drag out the sewing machine and sew. Literally today, just got new fabric.

2 - I have been 2x to a certain home improvement store to buy porch paint and both times I left there mad. Their employees are either woefully unhelpful or egregiously rude. I think I will probably cut up my credit card that I have with them (the interest is too high anyhow).

3a - I am thinking about downsizing my toys. The thing that mostly holds me back these days is the thought of photographing everything toward that end. Maybe I should get up and do that this afternoon instead of wasting time on the computer.

3b - How many toys is too many? I don't know if there's a good answer to that but lately I feel crowded.

4 - Husband is in the woods with middle boy and little boy, my 2 oldest kids are working, and my younger daughter is still in bed (at this hour?? srsly??) and the house is sooooo quiet, I am not used to this. But I like it.

5 - It is kinda hot. I feel like a jerk for complaining because we don't get as hot here as elsewhere in the world, but today is hot.

December 1: A confident woman is more attractive than anything else. I'm not sure I totally buy that (kindness, humor, wisdom, energy are pretty attractive too), but since confidence can be an issue for women, it's an important thing to keep in mind. Me, I'm confident in some areas, not so much in others. Something to think about.

Ok, here we go. 1) I learnt how to scuba dive a few years ago, had a bad experience with a seal and I doubt I will ever go scuba diving again 2) My middle name is Gwendoline 3) We lived briefly in Cornwall, England 4) I've never played a sport 5) Ian and I start our day every morning at a local cafe for a coffee 6) I haven't bought a new item of clothing for myself in 5 years, only thrift or handmade for me 7) I've never owned a microwave 8) I've only owned a mobile phone for four months 9) I love watching horror movies 10) My goal in life is to take the children to the UK and Europe for the biggest adventure ever 11) I was bought up as a Jehovah's Witness but left when I moved out of home, I don't identify with any faith now but hope my children will follow their own hearts 12) I still have my childhood Strawberry Shortcake collection in a cupboard and Sadie is allowed to play with them when she's home sick 13) I love the Beatles, Paul is my favourite 14) I prefer my own company 15) Ian and I hardly ever disagree 16) I have a phobia of numbers 17) I get claustrophobic easily 18) I never had any intentions of having four children and I still can't quite believe it 19) I'm a little obsessed with Dante Gabriel Rossetti 20) As a teenager my favourite pass time was bush tramping.

Liverpool 201222 #1

I haven’t posted for a few days now. The reason is that I received my replacement Fuji X-T5 last Sunday and I’ve been waiting for an opportunity to take it out on a photowalk to test its autofocus given that my previous X-T5 had bad autofocus problems.

Yesterday, Tuesday, the opportunity arose. I'd used Sunday and Monday registering the camera, updating its firmware, charging its battery and customising the various buttons to my satisfaction. So, on Tuesday I took my new X-T5 out for a drive to Liverpool. We visited the city’s two cathedrals then had a walk around the Baltic Triangle. The cathedrals posed lighting and architectural tests while the walk offered handheld chances for street photography.

The results were strange. I was delighted with the street photography images, some of which I’d taken while I was actually walking. On the other hand, almost all the cathedral shots were taken with the camera mounted on a sturdy tripod, stood on a good solid, level floor and using a two-second timer delay. Several of the tripod-mounted shots were out of focus, a couple badly so. I can, therefore, rule out motion blur. Counterintuitively the only cause I can think of is dodgy autofocus.

So much for my intro to a series of posts that I’ll be offering over the next few days, starting with images of some of the buildings in the Baltic Triangle, an up-and-coming area that is a go-to destination for young people – creatives and those seeking a night-out with a buzz. The centre is around a brewery.

For TRP...whispers

I keep forgetting that I was tagged a bit ago so here goes:

1) I have been pierced 17 times but I only wear one now, although I put earings in my ears occasionally.

2) I have a dog named Paris, my Dad named her, he did NOT know who Paris Hilton was until after he named the dog and wouldnt let us change it.

3) I live in Canada but I hate snow and winter! I cant wait for Spring!

4) I'm obsessed with unique graphic tees that dont often have writting on them.

5) I really want a cameo necklace (the old fashioned womans profile on an oval) and if anyone can tell me where to find one I would love them forever!

6) I always thought growing up that I would be married at 25, Im not and it doesnt bother me even though a lot of my friends are getting married.

7) IM NOT GETTING OLDER THIS YEAR!! Just so everyone knows.

8) When I was little I thought there were dinosaurs living in the basement that would disappear when the lights were on. Unfortunatly the basement light switch was on the far side of the room so I would run as fast as I could to turn it on.

9) Growing up I wanted to be a Doctor, a Photographer, an Artist, or an Arctech. I hated science until grade 9 when I had my favourite teacher of all time that made me fall in love with science. I now have a degree in Biology that Im not using yet but plan on using when Im done college for software engineering.

10) My all time favourite food is POPCORN! I eat it almost everyday.

11) I also enjoy stale popcorn.

12) I have two siblings, a brother 14 and a sister 22. At times I wish I had more but never less.

13) I want to travel the world one day. I want to backpack through Europe and Asia. I really want to spend a couple weeks in the UK. I want to go on safari in Africa and visit Australia.

14) I would love to live in an old castle made of stone.

15) My favourite colour is green.

16) I started this project to get over being shy in front of the camera and to make less odd faces. Im definitly not shy anymore but I still make some really odd faces half the time.

patmapa.gencat.cat/web/guest/patrimoni/arquitectura?artic...
