when i got a flickr account 3 years ago, my purpose was showing my pictures to a few friends of mine.

at some point, things must have got out of hand, 'cos yesterday i reached one million visits.

i didn't expect to meet so many nice, kind and funny people - besides of very talented photographers. i also learnt a lot about photography, and was inspired by many of you guys.

so, things turned out different than i expected, but i'm grateful for that, and i want to thank all of you with all my heart for your kindness, constant support and constructive criticism.

Verbier is a ski resort in the Swiss Alps, in the canton of Valais. It is part of the "Four Valleys" ski area, which includes the ski resorts of Verbier, Nendaz, Veysonnaz, La Tzoumaz, and Thyon. Verbier is recognized as one of the premiere "off-piste" resorts worldwide. Many top skiers have settled in the resort in order to take advantage of the steep slopes, varied conditions and vibrant nightlife. Verbier is also a popular holiday destination for celebrities, including Sarah Ferguson, Diana Ross, James Blunt and The Crown Prince Couple of Denmark: Frederik and Mary.

Verbier is located in the Val de Bagnes, in the Valais region of Switzerland. The resort lies on a south orientated terrace at around 1,500 metres facing the Grand Combin massif.

Verbier only has one access road, which starts in the town of Le Châble.

The Grand Combin is a mountain in the western Pennine Alps in Switzerland. With its 4,314 metres (14,154 ft) high summit it is one of the highest peaks in the Alps and the second most prominent of its range.

The Grand Combin is also a large glaciated massif consisting of several summits, among which three are above 4000 metres.

The Alps (French: Alpes; German: Alpen; Italian: Alpi; Romansh: Alps; Slovene: Alpe) is the name for one of the great mountain range systems of Europe, stretching from Austria and Slovenia in the east, through Italy, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Germany to France in the west. The word "Alps" was taken via French from Latin Alpes (meaning "the Alps"), which may be influenced by the Latin words albus (white) or altus (high) or more likely a Latin rendering of a Celtic or Ligurian original.

The highest mountain in the Alps is Mont Blanc, at 4,808 metres (15,774 ft), on the Italian-French border. All the main peaks of the Alps can be found in the list of mountains of the Alps and list of Alpine peaks by prominence.

The Alps are generally divided into the Western Alps and the Eastern Alps. The division is along the line between Lake Constance and Lake Como, following the Rhine. The Western Alps are higher, but their central chain is shorter and curved; they are located in Italy, France and Switzerland. The Eastern Alps (main ridge system elongated and broad) belong to Austria, Germany, Italy, Liechtenstein, Slovenia and Switzerland.

The Alps are a classic example of what happens when a temperate area at lower altitude gives way to higher elevation terrain. Elevations around the world which have cold climates similar to those found in polar areas have been called alpine. A rise from sea level into the upper regions of the atmosphere causes the temperature to decrease. The effect of mountain chains on prevailing winds is to carry warm air belonging to the lower region into an upper zone, where it expands in volume at the cost of a proportionate loss of heat, often accompanied by the precipitation of moisture in the form of snow or rain.

The Matterhorn (German), Cervino (Italian) or Cervin (French), is a mountain in the Pennine Alps. With its 4,478 metres (14,692 ft) high summit, lying on the border between Switzerland and Italy, it is one of the highest peaks in the Alps and its 1,200 metres (3,937 ft) north face is one of the Great north faces of the Alps.

The individual pieces of the chocolate bar Toblerone are claimed by its maker Kraft to be formed in the likeness of the Matterhorn.

Zermatt (French: Praborgne) is a municipality in the district of Visp in the German-speaking section of the canton of Valais in Switzerland.

It is located at the northern base of the Matterhorn in the Pennine Alps, about 10 km from the border with Italy.

Zermatt has a permanent population of around 5,500 people, although the actual population varies considerably through the seasons as tourists come and go. The village is situated at the end of Mattertal, a north-facing valley, at an altitude of 1,620m (5,315ft). The valley is a dead end; although the border with Italy is close, it cannot be crossed by road, as it traverses a glacier at an altitude of over 3,000m. Zermatt is the starting point of the Patrouille des Glaciers and the Haute Route.

This is my 9th entry to the CCCXI - Category: Child's Life

This was built for the Lands of Classic Castle and continues the story about Paul von Brickenstein

A little scene from Paul von Brickenstein's childhood. He and his friends found a cave in the forest of Lenfald and try to tease the inhabitant.

I've heard this spot at the Crystal River Mill near Marble, Colorado referred to as the most photographed spot in the state. I don't think that's true partly because there's a 4WD trail that tends to discourage the crowds. On this late night adventure during the peak of the fall foliage season, I decided to make a run for my vision of this historic mill with some long-exposure star trails above.

In this case, I had a pretty big challenge come up though… just outside of Marble, a deer bolted out of the woods and flashed right in front of my 4Runner. I was going about 45 and ended up killing the deer instantly and causing damage to my 4Runner. I had a few minutes on one of the pullouts to assess the damage and consider my options. And after pulling a bunch of metal and other materials out of my wheel wells to get some of my turning radius, I determined that nothing critical had been damaged… I still had some lights! So I made the decision to stick with my plan and continue on to 4WD trail up to the mill.

There is a lot more to this post... see the rest of the backstory, the techniques, and get free wallpaper from www.coloradocaptures.com/starry-night-star-trails-crystal-river-mill

On our walk through the Roxborough State Park, Colorado, United States.

The state park is known for dramatic red sandstone formations. Located in Douglas County 25 miles (40 km) south of Denver, Colorado, the 3,339-acre (13.51 km2) park was established in 1975. In 1980 it was recognized as a National Natural Landmark because of the number of ecological systems and geological formations. It is also a State Historic Site and National Cultural District because of the number of archaeological sites.

Roxborough State Park is a designated Colorado Natural Area and National Natural Landmark for its 300 million year old red sandstone Fountain Formation that tilt at a 60 degree angle. The park includes great examples of exposed Precambrian to Late Mesozoic hogback, monolithic and spire formations from the Permian, Pennsylvanian and Cretaceous age. Carpenter Peak's exposed granite is from Precambrian era.

The park consists of forests of ponderosa pine and Douglas fir, prairie land, and woodlands that support many forms of wildlife. There are 145 bird, over 50 butterfly and moth, and 11 amphibian and reptile species. Mammals commonly found in the park include black bear, coyote, deer, elk, fox, mountain lion, prairie dog, and rabbit. Sources of water include Little Willow Creek, Willow Creek and Mill Gulch. Elevations range from 5,900 to 7,280 feet (1,800 to 2,220 m).

There are six hiking trails in Roxborough State Park, a network of easy to moderate trails that also connect to Douglas County trail system, Pike National Forest and Waterton Canyon trails. (Wikipedia)

Panorama view on our way (Mt Evans Rd) to Summit Lake and Mount Evans in the Front Range region of the Rocky Mountains, Colorado.

The Front Range is a mountain range of the Southern Rocky Mountains of North America located in the central portion of the U.S. State of Colorado and southeastern portion of the U.S. State of Wyoming. It is the first mountain range encountered moving west along the 40th parallel north across the Great Plains of North America. The Front Range runs north-south between Casper, Wyoming and Pueblo, Colorado and rises nearly 10,000 feet above the Great Plains. Longs Peak, Mount Evans, and Pikes Peak are its most prominent peaks, visible from the Interstate 25 corridor. The area is a popular destination for mountain biking, hiking, climbing, and camping during the warmer months and for skiing and snowboarding during winter. Millions of years ago the present-day Front Range was home to ancient mountain ranges, deserts, beaches, and even oceans.(Wikipedia)

Truth be told, I'm jealous of Jayme's dogs and his fantastic photo's he takes of them. So I set out to take my own dog's portrait photo. First, I went out to the garage and dug out the box buried deep in the dark at the back. Then I opened the box, took out my dog, blew the dust off of him and put him down. Next I set up the shot, told the dog to sit and went to get the camera. Everything was all good until I went to snap the shot. As soon as I aimed the camera at him, he turned around, said Look, I'm Sally Fields as the Flying Nun and flew off over the fence and out of sight. Typical dog.

Gigante Adormecido

Minneapolis Minnesota downtown skyline view from a little hole in the jump fence offda E. Franklin Avenue bridge that crosses over Interstate 35W

I’m getting a few questions how this was done: I had my tripod setup for about 2 hours on the bridge. I took some pictures at dusk when it was still light out and then again later when it got dark and all the city lights turned on. This image is a composite of 2 pictures manipulated in Photoshop. The base picture was one of those shots taken at dusk using a 30 second long exposure to capture the car light streaks on the highway. To get that long shutter speed in dusky light, I used a Lee ‘Big Stopper’ 10 stop ND filter with ISO at 100 and an small Aperture of f/20 (shutter at 30 seconds). I took another 'night shot' without any filters later in the evening from that same spot to capture the buildings when the city lights were on. In Photoshop, I used the 30 second exposure 'dusk shot' as the base layer and then put the 'night shot' on top in a different Layer. I masked off everything except the buildings on the night shot Layer and changed the Layer Blend Mode to ‘Color Dodge’ – that mode will keep pixels if they are lighter than the layer below and will hide pixels if they are darker – the effect is like turning on all the lights of the city :)

A muchas gracias out to Cousin Greg for watching my back in that rather spicy neighborhood and my apologies to that other photographer for hogging the fence hole for so long :O

欧亨利——《最后一片叶子》

blog.sina.com.cn/s/blog_63eb49830100isfe.html

The leaf may be standing but I was practically on the ground... Being one with the nature afforded me a new perspective and was well worth the effort...

The sky was getting dark making it harder to get this shot done because I was handholding the camera without a tripod. Suddenly, a beautiful ray of sun light appeared from nowhere, permeating the woods. The most mysterious and magically part was a tiny ray of light brightened the single leaf I was focusing on. So I took one shot as fast as I can. Then, the sun disappeared again and never came back again. The background trees turns out to be surprisingly interesting, stained glasses ??

A good story about the last leaf

Rorschach like reflections in Loch Moidart with hubby fishing in the left foreground. This was taken in the late afternoon, but the sun, still relatively high, was so bright that the camera darkened everything else, making the colours look like late evening.

The Niederwalddenkmal is a monument located in the Niederwald Landscape park, near Rüdesheim am Rhein in Hesse, Germany. (Additional photos see in my comment.)

The monument was constructed to commemorate the foundation of the German Empire after the end of Franco-Prussian War. The first stone was laid on September 16, 1871, by Wilhelm I. The sculptor was Johannes Schilling, and the architect was Karl Weisbach. The total cost of the work is estimated at one million gold marks. It was inaugurated on September 28, 1883. The 38 metres (125 ft) tall monument represents the union of all Germans.

The monument's main inscription is engraved in the pedestal where the Germania statue is located: "ZUM ANDENKEN AN DIE EINMUETHIGE SIEGREICHE ERHEBUNG DES DEUTSCHEN VOLKES UND AN DIE WIEDERAUFRICHTUNG DES DEUTSCHEN REICHES 1870-1871." ("In memory of the unanimous victorious uprising of the German People and of the reinstitution of the German Empire 1870-1871"). The original idea by sculptor Johannes Schilling of the victory of the united German People was later adulterated into a more hostile interpretation against the "archenemy" France.

The Niederwald is a broad hill on the right bank of the Rhine, between that river and the Wisper, opposite Bingen am Rhein. The hill forms the southwestern apex of the Taunus range. Its summit is clothed with dense forests of oak and beech. Its southern and western sides, which descend sharply to Rüdesheim am Rhein and Assmannshausen on the Rhine, are covered with vineyards, and produce some of the finest wines of the district. The monument is located at the edge of the forest, on the crest of the hill above Rüdesheim.

Rüdesheim is a winemaking town in the Rhine Gorge and thereby part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. It lies in the Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis district in the Regierungsbezirk of Darmstadt in Hesse, Germany. It is officially known as Rüdesheim am Rhein, which distinguishes it from Rüdesheim an der Nahe. Bømlo - the island I'm from out there, on the western coast of Norway. Seen from a wonderful hike when we crossed the neighboring island Stord.

One of these gentlemen is Lord Dunalley (we think). The occasion was the coming of age of his son, the Hon. Desmond Prittie - the young chap in the centre presumably. This was taken at Kilboy, Nenagh, Co. Tipperary exactly 80 years ago today.
