The basilica of the "Annunciation" is located in Esslingen (southern Germany next to Stuttgart). It is the largest Greek Orthodox church in Europe outside Greece.

The three-aisled basilica was completed in 1995. The massive concrete structure was elaborately revetted and painted in a classic, orthodox manner.

For the Greek Orthodox faithful of Esslingen, the basilica is more than just a religious place. Here, the Greek life takes place, the church means their home.

Taken after the sunset on a windy and freezing day in Gaspesie, Quebec, Canada. Temperature was around -25 Celcius, but only god knows the windchill factor. By the way, a project might be on it's way to save this lighthouse by restoring it. I'm keeping my fingers crossed :)

Cap d’Espoir, a promontory at the north-east entrance to Chaleur Bay, Gaspesie, Canada, was noted on English charts and even by the Department of Marine as “Cape Despair,” a phontic sounding of the French name, which is totally opposite of its translation, “Cape of Hope.”

This Canadian lighthouse was proposed as early as 1868 to enable the fishermen, when coming from Miscou Bank in thick weather, to find safe harbour. Parliament voted $1,000 in 1871 for a lighthouse on the cape, but the funds were deemed insufficient, and construction was delayed until a sufficient additional sum could be obtained to build and equip a good sea light.

You can rent 2 houses on this site in winter, spring, fall and summer. It's well worth it. Capdespoir, Quebec, Canada

Actually it was taken from inside of a train on my way back from Nuremberg to Stuttgart ;-) ....

The year 2013 was a fairly slow year for my photography. Although I came home with many great images it seemd like Mama Nature was out to get me way too often. The previous evening I completely missed an absolutely stunning sunset and walked out of work an hour after sunset to see the sky was *still* ablaze with color. It looked like Mama Nature was out to get me again. The next day, this day, the clouds looked to be sticking around and I had no intentions of missing out.

Willie and I left work and drove up to the SF Coast with the intentions of photographing the Sutro Baths. In typical 2013 fashion Mama Nature didn't want my plan to go smoothly and fog began to roll in almost as soon as we got there. Guess we weren’t going to shoot the coast. Our only option was to cross the Golden Gate Bridge and hope the fog stayed low and continued to fill in. The heat of the sun kept the fog away from the Golden Gate Bridge and we, once again, had to abandon our plan and try something else. We hiked over a small hill to see what the fog looked like on the Pacific Ocean side of the coast and were greeted with a stunning layer of fog. Willie quickly suggested using the telephoto lens to get some intimate fog shots.

One area of fog that peaked my interest was a bowl-like section of fog that was creating dunes of fog. The rolling hills of fog were stunning to look at. I tried a number of compositions and ultimately decided I liked leaving some room on the right for the lines of fog to let the eye flow. I also knew that I wanted to smooth out the fog, hence I threw the Lee Big Stopper on and increased my shutter speeds to 20 seconds. What do you think, a neat patch of fog?

London Eye Reflection in a Panorama view of London

The London Eye is a giant Ferris wheel on the South Bank of the River Thames in London. Also known as the Millennium Wheel, its official name was originally the British Airways London Eye, then the Merlin Entertainments London Eye, and since January 2011, the EDF Energy London Eye.

The entire structure is 135 metres (443 ft) tall and the wheel has a diameter of 120 metres (394 ft). It is currently Europe's tallest Ferris wheel,[6] the most popular paid tourist attraction in the United Kingdom with over 3.5 million visitors annually,[7] and has made many appearances in popular culture.

When erected in 1999 it was the world's tallest Ferris wheel, until surpassed first by the 160 m (520 ft) Star of Nanchang in 2006 and then the 165 m (541 ft) Singapore Flyer in 2008. Supported by an A-frame on one side only, unlike the taller Nanchang and Singapore wheels, the Eye is described by its operators as "the world's tallest cantilevered observation wheel".[8] It offered the highest public viewing point in the city[citation needed] until it was superseded by the 245-metre (804 ft)[9] observation deck on the 72nd floor of The Shard, which opened to the public on 1 February 2013.[10]

The London Eye adjoins the western end of Jubilee Gardens (previously the site of the former Dome of Discovery), on the South Bank of the River Thames between Westminster Bridge and Hungerford Bridge, in the London Borough of Lambeth.

The Way of Human Rights (German: Straße der Menschenrechte) is a monumental outdoor sculpture in Nuremberg, Germany.

It was opened on 24 October 1993. It is sited on the street between the new and old buildings of the Germanisches Nationalmuseum, connecting Kornmarkt street and the medieval city wall.

In 1988, a twelve-person jury from the Germanisches Nationalmuseum held a design competition to decide on the artistic design of the Kartäusergasse street in Nuremberg. The winner was a proposal by Israeli artist Dani Karavan consisting of a gate, 27 round pillars made of white concrete, two pillars buried in the ground showing only a round plate, and one columnar oak, for a total of 30 pillars. Engraved in each pillar is one article of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in German and another language. The pillars are 8 metres in height, 80 cm in diameter, and spaced regularly at 5 metres along an axis. The north gate mirrors the medieval city gate located at the south end of the street.

The site of project has a layered history, including the remnants of a monastery, the medieval city wall, buildings designed by Sep Ruf in the 1950s and 1960s, and a glass-enclosed entrance designed by the firm ME DI UM in 1993.

This sculpture is part of Nuremberg's efforts to shake off its Nazi-era reputation as the "City of the Party Rallies" and reinvent itself as a "City of Peace and Human Rights". In 2001, Nuremberg was honored for this attempt at transformation with the UNESCO Prize for Human Rights Education, the Way of Human Rights being specifically cited. The monument is intended as both a repudiation of past crimes and a permanent reminder that human rights are still regularly violated. Nuremberg's prize for human rights, the Nuremberg International Human Rights Award, is awarded on the site every two years. (Wikipedia)

In Dubai, E 11 is known as "Sheikh Zayed Road"

(in Arabic: شارع الشيخ زايد ). It is the longest road in the UAE, it streches from the city of Abu Dhabi and ends in Ras Al Khaimah, running roughly parallel to UAE's coastline along the Persian Gulf. The road forms the main artery in some emirates' main cities, where it assumes various alternate names — Sheikh Maktoum Road in Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Zayed Road in the town of Dubai, and Sheikh Muhammed bin Salem Road in Ras Al Khaimah.

I have finally reached 100 uploads! Something I never thought I will, but it has taken close to 5 years of intermittent activity. Still I feel glad that I stuck with it as I have learnt a lot in terms of places to visit, composition and techniques from a lot of people here for which I am very thankful...

Coming to this one, when I reached the Lands End, as luck would have it, the whole day was bright and sunny and as dusk neared, the rain started and to be honest it was almost incessant and torrential as well. I was told that in the UK, if the rain is pouring down like there is no tomorrow in summer, two things can happen. It would either continue to pour down or it would start clearing...

I always knew I would not visit this place again and as it was raining, there was a small shed nearby this spot where I took shelter. I literally went down on my knees and started praying for the rain to relent because this is such a beautiful place that I did not want to go back empty handed...Now I am not saying all my prayers get answered, but in about half an hour, the clouds started moving easterly as the breeze picked up.

I got about 20 mins to complete my shoot after which the clouds engulfed the area completely and it rained well into the night. I could not do much of experimentation as the clouds were building up all around me. So I unpacked, got a few shots and ran back to the room. Even in this shot, you can see that it is raining in the horizon. One of my favourite shoots as it not only involved a gorgeous location, but getting a shot of this place was an adventure in itself...The first of the rock formation is known as the Enys Dodnan and the one farther than that is the Armed Knight.

Thanks for viewing and have a nice weekend everyone!

Thank you for the support, my friends.

British History - Magnificent North Entrance - Westminster Abbey, London, England.

The north side of the church is supported by nine buttresses, each of five gradations, with pointed windows between them; the buttresses are connected with the clerestory of the nave by slender arches, and the wall finishes with battlements.

The great door of the northern transept is an arch sprung from four large pillars on either side, with foliated capitals. The wall is of considerable thickness, and on each side of the great door it is formed into two arches by handsome pillars; the lesser entrances to the aisles are four pillars in depth, with ribbed roofs, having figures of angels at the intersections of the ribs. Above the doorways is a colonnade or range of pierced arches. Four massive buttresses secure the front; those at the angles terminate in octagons, and are connected with the upper part of the walls, over the side-aisles, by strong arches. Between the colonnade and the point of the roof is a beautiful "rose window," which was rebuilt in the year 1722. A great part of the north transept was rebuilt in 1828. "Time was," writes Mr. Charles Knight, "when this front had its statues of the twelve apostles at full length, and a vast number of other saints and martyrs, intermixed with intaglios, devices, and abundance of fretwork; and when, on account of its extreme beauty, it was called 'Solomon's Porch;' and now, even injured as it is, the whole forms a rich and beautiful façade."

The north transept became known as Statesmen's Aisle following the burial of Prime Minister William Pitt, Earl of Chatham in 1778. Here also can be found the graves of Charles James Fox, William Gladstone and Lord Palmerston and memorials to Benjamin Disraeli and Sir Robert Peel among others. The stained glass in the north rose window was designed by Sir James Thornhill in 1722, although it was altered in the late 19th century by J.L.Pearson. The three small chapels on the eastern side of this transept contain some fascinating monuments including that by Roubiliac to Lady Elizabeth Nightingale (pictured) which shows a skeletal figure of Death emerging from a cavern to aim his dart at the dying lady.

In the north ambulatory can be found the large memorial to General James Wolfe. The upper Islip chapel was dedicated as the Nurses Memorial chapel in 1950 in memory of UK and Commonwealth nurses who died in the 1939-45 war (this chapel can be viewed on application to the information desk). Many fine Elizabethan monuments can be seen in St John the Baptist's chapel and St Paul's chapel, including the tallest monument in the Abbey (36 feet) to Henry Carey, Lord Hunsdon.

Loch Tarsan is a reservoir, dammed at both ends, not far from Dunoon. I've started to play around with the settings on my camera a bit (baby steps so please bear with me) I took this on aperture priority at 22. I'm pleased with it in that I think the focus is much sharper throughout the image than any other shots I've taken with this camera, but it's more or less wiped out all the detail in the shadowed area in the foreground. Any advice on how to set up the shot so that doesn't happen would be much appreciated, for example would I have been better doing a slightly longer exposure with a lower iso, or a much longer exposure with a tripod and filter, or something else altogether?
