The foothills of the mountains in the Southern Lakes are covered in trees. The acid soils and humid conditions encourage ferns and moss, sessile oaks and the most wonderful beech trees, many of which are copper beech. Holly, rowan and hazel grow here too - the perfect environment for wildlife. Bird song everywhere - just magic. Red squirrels also abide here, unseen (by me, quiet as I was), as they are small and quick.
We even had a pair of nuthatches visit our bird feeder. They became used to me, coming out for the special food I put out for them. They were raising families of course, and so their food was rich in protein. Not cheap, but worth it !
Taken from the top of our 'holiday retreat' path one morning. The light was so lovely.

Die anhaltende Kälte im Januar 2017 lässt den Main zufrieren. Hier ein Blick von der Alten Mainbrücke in Würzburg über den Fluss zur Festung Marienberg. Nur noch kleine Bereiche im Bereich des Wasserkraftwerks sind wegen der starken Wasserströmung dort eisfrei.
The persistent cold in January 2017 causes the river Main to freeze. Here a view from the Alte Mainbrücke (Old Bridge) in Würzburg over the river to the fortress Marienberg. Only small areas in the zone of the hydroelectric power plant are free of ice due to the strong water flow.

not my usual subject material, but i do like the sense of speed and movement here. and these high-performance, 1940s-era advanced training aircraft were fun to watch, particularly when piloted so expertly by this fantastic aerobatic team.
my first ever air show. and a night show at that.

A closer view towards the altar of the late renaissance Michaelskirche in Munich.
St, Michael was built from 1583 to 1597. It was massively damaged during an allied bomb raid in 1944 and reconstructed from 1946 to 1948.

A nightly view from the southern gate of the Alter Hof imperial residence towards the Burgstraße.
The Alter Hof is a 12th century castle that served as residence of the dukes of Bavaria and was also the permanent residence of Louis IV, Holy Roman Emperor (Ludwig der Bayer).

If I moved about I probably could have got a perfect reflection, but I thought the grass added nice foreground detail and made the shot a little different. This is the second outing for my Big Stopper and I am really pleased with the way it has caught the cloud which is tinged by the sunrise.

A prosperous establishment of the early 1870's, with an elegant Mansard roof, small tower and iron grillwork. Sign of the growth associated with the construction of the Third Welland Canal (1871-1882). Its neighbour, 325 St. Paul St., is a well maintained example of the same period

At the northern end of the Kornstraße is the Einlasstor (roughly "admittance gate") city gate. The gate got its name from being the only town gate where late arrivals could enter the town in medieval times - but only for a special fee.
The gate with its 19 m tall tower was first mentioned in 1469.

I took this shot within an hour of landing in New York. I seen that it was going to be a glorious sunset and I booked the tickets for the "Top of the Rock" on my phone in the limo to the Hotel. I dropped the bags at the Hotel, printed the tickets and ran. I thought we were going to miss the sunst because of all the security checks, but got in just in time to take this. It was well worth it, as this is almost exactly the scene I was met with, I promise I have not touched the saturation sliders on this, just tweaked the contrast and sharpness a little.
I should also add that I shot this hand held leaning on a wall as they don't allow tripods up there, I would prefer it to be a little sharper, but Im not complaining!
