Juan De Fuca Fail
Day 1 & sadly the final day. So much planning has gone into this trip. From flying the kids to grandma in Ontario, to slowly gathering all the hiking supplies, to getting off work, booking Airbnb’s and figuring out how @laura.j66 can do it with a post herniated disc. The first two days were basically just traveling to the island and trying to comfort the children from 4000km via FaceTime since it was their first time away from us. The hike started out so promising and breathtaking, within the first 20min we saw sea lions jumping from a cliff into the ocean and two sea otters having a full on wrestling match just meters away from us. The packs were heavy as hell but we were managing well. Especially @laura.j66 was ecstatic at how strong she was feeling. Then disaster struck at km 10. I was descending some steep roots and took a small leap off a step and my right knee locked out, unfortunately I was mid air and couldn’t stop the landing and just heard/felt an excruciating crunch. I didn’t resist and just let myself fall hoping it would prevent any serious damage. I sat there for a couple of minutes and was still able to bend my knee and extend it but I knew it was fucked. I loaded up the pack and had to act fast because I don’t know how much longer I could walk on it. There was no way in hell I’m getting carried out of here. Turns out we had to limp another 10km to get to the nearest highway and then hitchhike. Funny thing was that a volunteer search and rescue fire fighter picked us up ♂️. So we basically hiked almost half the Juan de Fuca trail in one day, 20km in over 9hrs, 10 of those km with a fucked up knee and a 70lbs & 30lbs pack. FML.
