This is a medium/hard trail with many incline changes to get to the Mystic beach. You had to play close attention to your footing , especially going over the many roots
West Coast of Vancouver Island, during a backpacking trip with my daughter. Camped the first night at Bear Beach.
A hidden gem along the Juan de Fuca trail, the Parkinson Creek seal grotto is a place like none other. This is the stuff of fantasy.
We found our way into this cave using a low tide, a few climbing skills and a rope to assist us over slimy rocks. The reward, a place of true majesty.
Low tide just beyond sunset on a glorious November day.
I love this place more than words can ever express.
Mystic Beach, Juan de Fuca Trail, Vancouver Island.
I wasn't going to bother shooting this spot along the Juan de Fuca trail that I had been to a few times before, but as I walked past the area I thought what the heck and went down there in order to 'take another shot at it'.
As I surveyed the angles I decided that it was worthwhile to stick around, but after taking some different comps from the past it was the simple straight on shot from a certain distance that I thought worked out the nicest.
I guess that simple works best at times.
This will also be one of the spots I take the participants of the 'Adventurer's Only' Workshop on April 9th and 10th, 2016.

Camped at Bear Beach on a 4-day trek along the Juan de Fuca trail with my daughter. We were treated to a gorgeous sunset our first night.
Another image from my recent trip over to Vancouver Island. If you're interested in watching some of the thought process that went into this image be sure to watch part 2 of my vlog. Thanks!
The 'golden hour' was certainly golden on this particular afternoon. Yes, I say afternoon, because the sunset was just after 5pm in January!
This was the first time I had been to this part of the Juan de Fuca trail around Sombrio Beach.
You can get a glimpse of the small waterfall that flows into the ocean on the right side third of the photo. The view of the waterfall is better from the other side, but I quite make it over there on time to catch the golden glow on the cliffs.
This sunset shot was taken on the far side of the waterfall at Mystic Beach.
Unfortunately, the flow of the waterfall was so sparse that it didn't show up on this angle........ but it sure was a beauty of a sunset.

Only a couple times a year, there comes a tide low enough to traverse the shelves below some sections of the Juan de Fuca Trail. The rewards are tiny pocket beaches, giant sea stacks, huge caverns, and treasures galore.
This particular low tide happened to be at about 5:30am. I had just returned to the island and had never seen this particular area at a tide quite this low. I rappelled in at a waterfall, and walked 3km of glorious intertidal zone during a misty sunrise. The colours of the rainforest came alive this morning, as the mist dissipated and the sun shone through, the greens grew ever vibrant as the seals barked as they gazed upon me from the mellow swells offshore. Mesmerizing moments. This land is truly spectacular. It's good to be back.
