My non-fiction work based on research from the local Sequim government website and wikipedia:
📷 What do you know about Sequim’s #scandalous second settler and the #history of John Bell?
ℹ An Englishman and conscripted escapee from the Hudson Bay Company in Fort Victoria, BC, he rowed his way to freedom with a stolen boat
🚣 He crossed the Strait of Juan de Fuca to #clallamcounty and hid out in the northern #pugetsound area from British authorities 👮
Before becoming a naturalized citizen, he was a volunteer soldier in the region’s final Indian Wars 🐦
He later was the groom in the first non-native wedding in Clallam County in 1856 with his Scottish bride, Sara Ann Greenlaw Vert 👰
They had 5 kids and their first, Mary Jane, was the first non-native child born in the county 🚼
These days, his 160-acre homestead claim is part of the southeast corner of Sequim Ave. and WA Street, and his name is part of Bell Hill, a census-designated place outside #sequim city limits with less than 1,000 residents and a per capita income ranking at Number 21 out of 522 places in #washingtonstate, per @wikipedia ℹ
