Hessonite belongs to the grossularite species of garnet and is coloured by iron. Spessartite is its own species of garnet and is coloured by manganese and iron, which tends to be a brighter and less brown-orange.

Although initially suspected of being found in Antananarivo, we eventually found the source of the gem in the Deniyaya area, Sri Lanka.
