One of three images of rare garnet specimens from China, these orange garnets are hard to find. Garnets are one of the oldest gemstones, used in Egyptian and Greek jewelry just as they come from nature. No faceting is usually done with garnets. This macro image shows a larger view than life size. The entire specimen measures about 4 1/2" across. The previous image shows the other piece which has lighter orange crystals.
Spessarite garnet crystals on matrix are from Fujian Province, China and are also known as Mandarin garnets.

Loliondo produced thousands of garnet specimens and they flooded the market around 15 years ago. This one is particularly good because the crystal is on matrix and is intensely colored and damage free. The faces awre much more lustrous than average. I acquired this piece from Dr Robert Lavinsky during a visit to The Arkenstone Gallery in Dallas, Texas in mid 2012. I resold it to Stuart Wilensky in September of 2012.
