When WRD Fisheries Biologist John Damer arrived at the Coosa River in Floyd County last Thursday, he did not know what to expect. Damer was responding to reports from several anglers that there was a lake sturgeon swimming around inside the decommissioned Mayo Lock and Dam near Rome. Angler sightings of lake sturgeon are not unusual, but they are sometimes difficult to verify without a photo from the angler. Damer had a good feeling about this one, and decided to visit the Lock and Dam to see if he could spot the fish himself. Well, not only did he observe the 39-inch sturgeon swimming inside the lock, he was actually able to capture it along with another smaller (25-inch) sturgeon using only a long-handled dipnet! These fish were weighed, measured, checked for tags, and released above the lock, as a few lucky bystanders witnessed the whole encounter. As it turns out, both of these fish were previously tagged. Our WRD records show that the larger sturgeon had been seen last by UGA researchers in March of 2007 when it was only 18 inches long. The smaller fish had been recently stocked by the GoFish Center in September of this year. Damer suspects that these two fish had entered the lock to seek refuge from strong currents caused by last week’s rising flood waters. If you see or catch a lake sturgeon please release it unharmed, then call the Calhoun Fisheries Office at 706-624-1161 to report your sighting. .
