Popped to Abberton this morning, noticed a strange duck with the mallards hadn't a clue what it was and being the only one there as it was early morning, thought I'd look it up later! Luckily a lady came along who knew what it was as it was on Facebook that there was one at Abberton. Comes from South America!

Herbstlust

Last week I posted a photo of Victoria Glacier from Lake Louise showing the glacier lit up in alpenglow light. I also talked about how the crowds at Lake Louise increase dramatically as the morning grows later. Fortunately, with sunrise happening at 5:15am, we still had a relatively crowd-free chance to roam around the lake taking photos. The lake is pretty accessible from all sides, which allows for lots of different compositions. While the light wasn't the golden glow of sunrise when I took this photo, it was still very nice. The lake was smooth as glass, allowing for great reflection shots (my favorite type of photo). For this composition, I wanted to have Victoria Glacier in it while capturing the reflection of Mount Aberdeen in the waters of Lake Louise.

When I first arrived in Iceland, it took a while to let the thoughts fully sink in that I was indeed, actually, in Iceland; the number one country I had dreamed of visiting for years. The first couple of days passed with that dreamy, hazy feeling, not quite believing life is real. On the third day (a month ago today as I write this), my team and I went to visit some waterfalls... We were at Skógafoss, where I set up my tripod and camera while staring in silent awe at the cascading water. I began to shed my layers of scarves, coat and sweaters in preparation to put on my red dress for this self-portrait... and then I patiently waited. Waited for the sun and clouds to line up correctly to light the waterfall just right. Waited for the surrounding tourists to finish taking their photos. Waited for the breeze to blow the mist away from my camera lens. After almost 45 minutes, I finally saw my chance. I slipped off my shoes and ran towards the falling sheets of water, camera clicking away behind me... and was suddenly engulfed in the freezing, falling mist as I spun around joyously at the bottom of the falls. It was that very moment, when my clothes were soaked through and my feet kept slipping between rocks and I felt absolutely frozen, that my mindset finally changed from "dreamy, hazy" to "Oh my frognoggin' firecrackers this is freaking real" before I had to run back to the safety of my coat and scarf. It was one of those moments where I felt most alive... My heart felt so big and yet the rest of me felt so small. I have greatest respect for these places in nature and I simply can't fathom how beautiful this world is. It blows my mind over and over again.

Don't miss any post!

After a photo tour in Glacier National Park, Jeff Clow and I headed to the Palouse to scout out over 200 locations. I had visited the park last year, and Jeff had always wanted to go to but hadn't yet. He has been inundated with requests from his alumni to host a tour there, but he needed to see what it was all about. I wasn't sure what to expect when we got there, as I had only been there in the late spring when everything is all shades of green. We were hoping to catch the harvest in the Palouse, but we weren't sure if we timed it right. Happily, the harvest was still happening although we might have gotten there when it was half over.

I must say that I was in for a shock when I first set my eyes on it. All of the shades of greenery were gone and were replaced with more of a monotone color. As the scouting trip went on, I got used to the change in color and fell in love with the landscape all over again. Just like the spring, the light plays such an important part in showing the Palouse at its best. The undulating hills create these terrific shadows, which really add a three-dimensional look to the landscape. I particularly loved scenes like this, where the farm is nestled in among the mounds and hills.
