Senior wildlife biologist John Jensen found this tiger salamander and scores of tiger sally egg masses on The Nature Conservancy in Georgia properties in Marion County Monday. Tiger salamanders are Georgia's largest terrestrial salamander and a high-priority species in the revised State Wildlife Action Plan. The recent finds by Jensen, Giff Beaton and the Conservancy's Geoff Sorrell included a previously unknown tiger sally breeding pond on the Conservancy’s Oakland Farms, an Army Compatible Use Buffer program site that completed a protected habitat corridor reaching from Chattahoochee Fall Line WMA to Ft. Benning. A gopher frog was seen this year in a nearby gopher tortoise burrow, and Jensen thinks the rare frogs may be breeding in the same Oakland Farms pond as the tiger sallies.
