Europe, Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Kruisplein, Parkeergarahe Kruisplein (Maarten Struijs). (uncut)
The Kruisplein parking is part of the Rotterdam Central Station development and was opened last November. With 5 underground levels it is the deepest parking in the Netherlands (-20 m).
Check out architect Maarten Struis explaining his design on You Tube : here (sorry, Dutch only)
Maarten Struijs (now retired) worked for Municipal Works (Gemeentewerken) and is specialized in infrastructure and mobility architecture. He also designed amongst many other things Rotterdam Centraal subway station, some stations of the Benelux and Randstad (e.g. Blijdorp station) subway lines and the Willemsbrug.
One of his leading themes is creating architecture that’s not disciplinary and entices voyagers to experience travelling as more then going from A to B in a regulated and strict way. Struijs tries to tickle the imagination, maybe even get people to dream. For this he creates clear, easy to ‘read’ spaces and plays with ornamentation and light.
The Kruisplein Parking is the final incarnation of his functionalist / evocationalist program. He didn’t use tight curves and steeply graded ramps - ‘Driving should be a relaxed experience.’ And the 5 floors are identified in three different ways. Each floor has (obviously) its own well displayed number, its own colour and because the parking is so long it has its own photo-landscape at the end of parking. This has another function too – despite the low ceiling it lessens the ‘closed in’ feeling and it tries to destabilize the 'A to B mindset'. He enlisted light to make it even easier to navigate the garage and get ones bearing: when one drives in the northen direction the light is cold (blue-ish) when the direction is southern direction it is warm (yellow and red).
Shot on the deepest level (fifth) of the parking.

Europe, Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Wilhelminapier, RoK Navy academy performers (uncut)
Last Sunday while on our way to the (Euromast)Park for an autumn walk we encountered some Asian officers and we remembered that there was a small South Korean Navy task force in town. So we went to the Wilhelminapier instead and had a look at the two ships: the destroyer Kang Gam Chan and the supply ship / oiler Dae Chum.
We learned that the ships are on a celebratory and training mission around the world. The celebration was about the 'ending' of the Korean war 65 year ago. The training part involved 140 cadets of the RoK Navy academy. They participated in a fascinating cultural program involving a welcome for Dutch Korean war veterans (we spotted only one and he was warmly welcomed and seated in the group of South Korean dignitaries and top brass) and amongst other things performances of a choir, a big band, traditional performers and a spectacular tea-kwondo demonstration.
Shown here is a group of traditional musicians / acrobats. They put in a very lively performance

Europe, Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Den Haag, Energiekwartier, Electriciteitsfebriek, Chistiaaan Zwanikken exhibition, Who let the dogs out, Staff, Visitors (uncut)
Christiaan Zwanikken is all about forced hybridization, mythical story telling and interaction. In his kinetic sculptures and installations he combines high tech electronic technology and lo-tech mechanical parts (often salvaged from scrapyards) with plants and body elements of animals (skulls, wings etc). Of course vapour and steam are used too.
The stories he tells are about spooking an innocent drumming Duracell rabbit, head banging anorexic cyborgs with goat’s skulls, a mechanical donkey on a tread mill and motorized, internally lit, racing skulls on dangerously bending thin metal tracks ('Who let the dogs out').
The installation shown here is 'Who let the dogs out".
On the right is a staff member while repairing one of the mechanical dogs ("He took a bad hit but can be fixed" he explained). The staff of the Electriciteitsfebriek is not only friendely and talkative. And do know their way around technology.
For work like Zwanikken’s, context is very important. Luckily it isn’t exhibited within the sterile white walls of a museum but in a delightfully gritty cathedral like multi level industrial building: the Electriciteitsfabriek (EF) (the Electricity factory). Some of the works were even crafted here. It’s the giant former storage facility (1928) of the The Hague municipal power station, from the time when it was still coal fired. The power station itself is still in operation, nowadays it’s gas-turbine based.
The Zwanikken exhibition is really an engaging must visit. The exhibition closes on April 30, so hurry. Check it out: here.
Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Central Station, Roof with glass panels and Y shaped pilar, Safety net, Catenary wires (uncut)
In nature some insects pupate .... and during construction most buildings do too. The construction or parts of it appear during the closing stages of the building process from the temporary coloured safety netting.
Displayed here is the netting (billowing in the wind) hanging from the roof of the train shed. Those little squares are photovoltaic elements.
This one was shot through a train (Fyra on track 10) window hence the textures on some elements of the picture.

Shot at the new edition of the World Port Days of Rotterdam. here. Number 2 of the street shots I made there to get further acquainted with the Lumix GX9.
The Dutch National Police was on strike at the World Port Days and the goings at the festivities were monitored by 'crowd managers' of TSC, a private security corporation.
