A tram network is one of the most effective modes of public transportation. It’s zero-emission, high density and relatively fast (when the trams can run on independent tracks).
But it’s pretty capital intensive and not very flexible too. When an operator, like the Rotterdam RET here on the City – South line, decides that a tram service will be split in two, for the shortened service a separate return loop (keer lus) has to be created. Because most trams have only one driving cabin and can’t just simply change driving direction. In this case, a loop that uses the Postumalaan and the Veemstraat that connects to the existing tracks on the Laan Op Zuid has to be built.
Shown here are workers who are aligning the newly laid tracks. in the BG is the southern Erasmus bridge ramp.

A detail of the façade of the Theater Zuidplein showcasing its layered construction (industrial brick, aluminium panelling and glass).
The Rotterdam Zuid municipal library is integral to the Theater Zuidplein ( 2020). It has three halls and several studios. Archtect: De Zwarte Hond (Bart van Kampen). Metadecor engineered and produced the ornamental semi-transparent façade (material: anodized aluminium).
The Zuidplein Theatre is a development of the 'Hart van Zuid', a public-private partnership organization primarily focused on the Zuidplein and the Ahoy events complex. The participants: the Municipality of Rotterdam, Ballast Nedam and Heijmans. Other projects in the Hart van Zuid portfolio are an extension of the Zuidplein shopping centre, a new bus station, a hotel, housing, and medical facilities. In the process, the surrounding public spaces will also be completely redesigned.

Europe, Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Dordrecht, Grotebrug, Skaters (slightly cut)
The 'Grotebrug' railroad prominently displayed here is hybrid, technology wise. The moving part of the bridge is a part of the old metal trestle bridge that used to span the river Merwede here and the concrete towering new part that lifts the old trestle. It was constructed in 1994 (design P. v.d. Ree).
Under the viaduct that leads to the bridge is a (temporary) compact skate park for youngster. It's in a tell tale place. It satisfies the appetite for fringy/transitory spaces of the young and the Nimby (Not in my backyard ) reflexes of residents who don't like groups of the 'noisy young' hanging out in residential areas.
This is the last one of a black and white septet.
And there will be a small pauze in my stream now. See y'all later !
I have spend 3 wonderful days with my mom in Noordwijk. She needed a short trip and I was happy to join her. I was so glad we had a glorious sunset on one of our nights, and that I could share it with her.

The TUI operated Mein Schiff 3 at the Rotterdam Cruise Terminal. Mein Schiff as name for a cruise ship has a consumerist connotattion. It was built in 2014 by Meyer-Turku and can accommodate 2500 passengers on its 15 decks. Other numbers: length: 300m, max speed 22 Knots and propulsion power: 28 MW. . The ship is relatively 'low' emission thru its exhaust desulphurisation system and nitrogen oxide cathalic converter.

* - in netherlands sprinter is a train that has to sprint a lot between every single station on the way to make sure it makes a 10km journey below half hour mark :D. it used to be aptly called stoptrein (because it was more stopping than actually riding) but few years back some creative marketing mind came up with the new confusing name
Europe, The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Timmerhuis (OMA), Atrium (cut from all sides)
The modular frame and cells of an atrium of the Timmerhuis look less severe maybe even a bit 'organic', when captured with a fisheye lens.
About the ‘Timmerhuis’. The first 5 floors of this OMA
building (Rem Koolhaas, Reinier de Graaf. Interior design: Saskia Simon, Katrien van Dijk) are used by the municipality of Rotterdam (22.000 square meters, max capacity of 1800 civil servants) and Museum Rotterdam, the top section of the building is formed by 84 apartments. It’s this level that gives the building its striking multi-'cube' shape. In OMA speak, the rectangular 'cubes' are called pixels.
Other defining features are its play with inside/outside, due to the extensive use of partly translucent glass (OMA likes to call the building ‘a cloud of glass and steel’) and last but not least its internal metal modular frame which defines the building’s internal space – it divides and unites, as is shown in this capture, which is shot into one of the two atriums of the building.
The modular frame is obviously empty in the atriums. One is shown here. The size of an individual cell is 7,2 x 7,2 x 3.6 m and when a cell is actually filled it becomes a 'pixel' with a floor area of 50 square meter.
More about the atriums: "through the two large atriums, which act like lungs. They are connected to a climate system that stores warmth in summer and cold in winter and releases this energy as warm or cold air as required" . Source: here.

The Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam Zuid, Kop van Zuid, Wilhelminepier, De Rotterdam building site
From the archives. Shot during the construction of De Rotterdam 'vertical city'. Renzo Piano's Belvédère (2000, KPN HQ) forms the backdrop of the two Wolff tower cranes (three, if you count one of the shadows in the right-bottom corner too).
Züblin was, by the way, the main building contractor.
This is what I wrote 9 years ago at the start of the construction process:
"De Rotterdam, a very large Rem Koolhaas (OMA) designed array of three linked highrises. Construction was started in 2010. The edifice will have 41 floors and a floor space of approximately 160,000 square meters. The height: will be 149 meters. Its massive presence will dominate the skyline of Kop van Zuid - perhaps too much so.
The start of the construction was 1 year late because of the economic crisis - the floorspace demand plummeted dramatically on the already oversaturated office space market. The municipality stepped in to rescue the project 'cause it was deemed of strategical importance to the Kop van Zuid (and it probably is). The rescue was the decision to rent a considerable amount of the office space - after completion of the building a substantial part of Rotterdam's civil servant's workforce will move to 'De Rotterdam'.
'De Rotterdam' won't be only about offices, apartments, a hotel, conference facilities, a gym, shops, restaurants and cafe will be created too. The resulting vertical density has inspired the project developers to coin and market it as a 'Vertical City'. A not highly inspired name - the Montevideo highrise (Mecanoo/Francien Houben) - the highrise with the M on top in the pic ) was introduced the same way ;-)"

The last phase of the demolition of Tweebos quarter is shown here. Most of the rubble is removed now, the ground is levelled, and grass is planted to settle the soil.
After that, the construction of the new buildings will be started.
The backstory about the unfortunate demolition of the Tweebos-buurt is here.
This is number 13 of the Demolition of the Tweebosbuurt series here.
