This Baker Electric was the model for Grandma Duck’s car in Walt Disney’s Donald Duck cartoons.
Note the beautiful silk and brocade interior upholstery, which denotes that this Baker was a luxurious automobile aimed at the ladies of high society. The roof was built high to allow for the large hats that were fashionable at the time.
The dashboard was located at the top, against the roof and merely consists of a Volt and an Ampere gauge. The batteries were placed in the front under the ‘bonnet’ and in a space at the rear, and could be recharged by connecting to the mains; the engine itself was located underneath the seat. The car had tiller steering, which was relatively outdated at the time that it was launched.
The Baker was positioned as the ‘Aristocrat of Motordom’, which guaranteed freedom from ‘the Uncertainties of the Explosive Motor or Steam-Driven Vehicles’.

Although on first impressions this looks to be a standard Series 111 109” military Land Rover, there is an important difference. The engine and running gear are in place but the back is packed with eleven aviation-type gel sealed batteries connected to produce 216V and there is an electric motor driving the PTO point on the gearbox.
The vehicle dates from 1975 but the conversion was carried out in 1993 at DERA Land Systems at Chertsey as a trials vehicle for use in Northern Ireland, the obvious attraction presumably being the potential for silent running.
Flicking a switch on the dash and engaging the PTO swaps power from petrol to electric. The brakes use an electric vacuum pump and drive is broken by a switch on the brake pedal pad. There is a rheostat on the throttle pedal which controls the current.
We understand that three of these were built and tested, the other two being Defender-based, but they never went into production. Silent drive except for the noise of the military tyres!

NXWM Wright StreetDeck Hydroliner H1006 (BX21DCF) is seen here turning onto Moor Street Queensway, Birmingham working the 936 to Walsall.
What a wonderful gift from Tesla – the chance to drive the same car that I have had since August, but now with an entirely new motor, inverter and gear box. They just upgraded me to Powertrain 1.5 and firmware 3.1.12
It’s much smoother and has the rail gun torque that I had read so much about. Also, the battery coolant pump now shuts down when parked (an irksome precaution in early models that is no longer needed).
The interesting back story is that a major redesign of the whole drivetrain was enabled by a breakthrough in the semiconductor industry – a new IGBT (power transistor) that just started shipping. Advances in the smallest of components unlocked a design cascade to remove the need for shifting altogether (no transmission) while also improving efficiency (longer range, higher performance, 30% more torque, 14,000 RPM redline).
The Tesla blog has the full story and gearbox photos from the CTO, J.B. Straubel.
The fortunes of First Bus have seen quite a turn in recent years, where after a long period of retrenchment and disposals it has embarked upon multiple bouts of expansion via acquisition. By far the largest component of that is purchase of the former RATP Dev Transit London operation. It took First back into the Transport for London market after having exited it over a decade ago. Naturally, no livery change is required for vehicles that came with the deal, but First Bus fleet names now look to have been applied to all of that stock. Buses still carry RATP Dev Transit London numbers but all have First Bus national series numbers 'in the background'.
Here is seen BCE47150 (LG71 DXJ), a BYD ADL Enviro400EV battery-electric double-decker in Southgate working a 125 journey to Colindale. It is numbered 38540 within the First Bus scheme, according to the Bustimes site.
Yutong came to the UK coach market via dealership Pelican Bus and Coach in 2014, expanded into buses in 2016 or so, and has seen massive growth in numbers since then. It is reckoned that around 850 passenger vehicles from the manufacturer will be registered here in 2025. While the idea of taxpayer subsidy going to a Chinese builder is not to everyone's taste, the reality of the Yutong battery-electric product is that it is highly mature and exceptionally reliable, with 100% availability not unusual. McGill's Bus Group has been an enthusiastic purchaser, first for its core McGill's Buses fleet and now with Xplore Dundee and Midlands Bluebird.
One of the earliest purchase is I 5043 (SG71 OUF), an E12 single-decker. Here it is working a 23 from Glasgow Paisley and turns next to a quintessential Glaswegian bar, The Laurieston.

The “Bulli Concept” gives a nostalgic wink to the classic Volkswagen microbus, 60 years after its original debut. At the same time, It’s an unmistakable example of Volkswagen’s commitment to innovation. The Bulli is designed with an electric powertrain and completely interactive driver interface, integrating an iPad touch screen. It also has a more compact footprint than any of its predecessors, while still offering comparable interior space. The “Bulli Concept” has been designed thoughtfully and thoroughly. It may have been inspired by the past, but it’s fully loaded for the future.
