Historic Pub Crawl: XML Summer School 2009 by John Chelsom et al from the xmlsummerschool.com
Follow the blobs on the map.
1. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turf_Tavern 8pm
2. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lamb_&_Flag,_Oxford 9pm
?. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Eagle_and_Child 10pm
(Please don't ask about our numbering system, but after the first two pubs you probably won't be bothering too much about the numbers anyway)
Start from St Edmund Hall, turn right out of the front gate and follow Queens lane round a few twists and turns until just before the en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bridge_of_Sighs,_Oxford where you turn right into a narrow alley which leads to the Turf Tavern (really, it does)
The Turf
We start our crawl at the Turf Tavern, one of the many establishments claiming to be Oxford's oldest pub. Its foundations date from at least the thirteenth century. The current timbered front part is seventeenth century when it was progressively a malthouse, a cider house (1775) and finally an inn (cira 1790), the Spotted Cow, it was renamed the Turf Tavern in 1805 and thus it remains to the present.
The pub has been frequented by such like of Inspector Morse and Bill Clinton, and some would claim it is the "...obscure and low-beamed tavern up a cout" visited by Jude Fawley in Hardy's Jude The Obscure.
The Lamb and Flag
While the Eagle and Child was once the haunt of a selection of Oxford's most esteemed writers, The Lamb and Flag is more famous for being portrayed in literature, most famously by Thomas Hardy, who weaved a wonderous depiction of it in his novel Jude the Obscure. The front bar features the crests of each University college.
Originally owned by the nuns of Godstow Abbey, it was purchased by St. Johns College (along with the rest of St. Giles) in around 1695 when it became an ale house, possibly called The Lamb. Halls Brewery acquired the lease in 1829 and though much of the original building remains, an early 1980's brewery takeover and subsequent 're-fit' condemned the wooden 'snugs' - the focal point of Hardy's novel - to the skip.
The Eagle & Child
The Eagle and Child has a resplendant literary history, and has been famous as an academic haunt for many decades, if not centuries. The Oxford author and diarist en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthony_Wood_(antiquary) (1632-1695) had rooms nearby and it is said that he composed his monumental Athenae Oxoniensis here.
The pub's principal fame rests on its connection with The Inklings, a group of writers and Oxford academics who met here every Thursday - in the 'Rabbit Room', a snug room opposite the end of the bar - from the 1930's to the 1960's to discuss their work. The group included J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis and Charles Williams. It is said that Tolkien spent so much time here, he kept a pair of slippers behind the bar.
After one almighty session, Hugo Dyson, a member of the group and the Absinthe imbiber extraordinaire, became convinced that tiny people with hairy feet were trying to steal his pipe. This event, of course, was to be the catalyst for Tolkien's main legacy - 'The Lord of The Rings'.

Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class XML-11 49451 missing a door at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in July 1982, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This car was stenciled: WHEN EMPTY RETURN TO AGENT CB&Q RR LACROSSE, WISC. It was also stenciled: XL and HV.12.69, indicating that it had loader devices and had been at Havelock in December 1969. It has a non-standard paint scheme, likely because the merger was anticipated to be approved, the Burlington Northern colors had been chosen, but not the lettering font or style. The following is excerpted from the book, CB&Q Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Equipment, by Michael J. Spoor: CB&Q #'s 49400 - 49799 were built at Havelock ( CB&Q shops in Nebraska ) during 1966 ( as Class XML-11 ). Built to a Northern Pacific design, these were the only boxcars on the Q to feature the waffle pattern on the car side. All of the cars featured the combination 6' and 8' plug doors with grain access doors ( at the top of the 8' door ) originally introduced in 1963 on the Class XM-4's. Also like the XM-4's, they had an inside length of 50' 6" and a 5,080 cu. ft. capacity. While the XM-4B's of 1966 came with roofwalks and ladders, these cars never received either, even though both groups of cars were being built at the same time.
The waffle side cars featured protrusions on the exterior which held load tie-downs on the interior. Between 1967 and 1970, 126 cars had their loading devices removed and were re-classed XM-4C while retaining their former numbers. The only visible difference was the class stencil - XML or XL ( loader equipped ) or XM ( loaders removed ) - to the right of the CAPY data.
