A small waterfall in Matthiessen State Park that I've never been to before. I took a wrong turn as you come down the stairs into the canyon and walked along the ice until I came to a dead end and this nice little frozen waterfall.
Matthiessen State Park, IL.
I just realised when I finished editing this one that the clock is a little off! Was good to be in town again over the weekend.

The Rochester & Southern has always been an interesting railroad to me. The second acquired property of the Genesee and Wyoming corporation as it's known today, the R&S was the first major toe-dip into the big leagues for GWI back in 1986. The little railroad that ran salt out of Retsof became a giant overnight it seemed from that point on, making acquisition after acquisition. Their purchase of the BR&P line from Rochester to Ashford Jct. didn't last all that long in its full length, with the line being torn out south of Silver Springs shortly after. As much as that sucks, the surviving portions are still neat and money makers in their own right.
Last time I was around, the railroad ran to the salt mine in Mt. Morris during the day and ran the turn to Silver Springs at night in the warmer months and swapped the schedule in the winter. Naturally, being the better line for a photographer, I was interested in the winter chases down to Silver Springs. On this day, a cold but snowless morning and early afternoon gave way to a powerful snowstorm once they hit Silver Springs. There was so much white around you'd think you were at a rodeo in Arkansas. This obviously led to some incredible pictures but no northbound chase as it was getting dark and the roads were not safe to keep up with a train on.
Thankfully however, the railroad has the rights to serve Morton Salt in Silver Springs, which gave me a little more photography opportunities than a simple interchange swap would. While I could have used some salt on the roads at the moment, we were at the wrong salt customer on this railroad for that. The salt they're concerned with at Morton usually ends up on your table, not under your tires. Nonetheless I was able to hop around the small town as they made their moves. The spur down into the plant is a ridiculous grade, made obvious by the four units descending into the background of the image here. I can only imagine how fun it was to crawl back out onto the main for the crew that day. I bet they wouldn't have minded having some salt of their own on the rails.
After a few more shots I tiptoed my way home through a wall of white with an SD card full of goodies. What a fun end to the day that was.
Oops, just realised I have given the wrong cutting size for the hst squares! They should be cut at 2 3/8" not 2 7/8". Sorry! I always get that wrong! You'll have lots of trimming room if you cut them 2 7/8" ;b If you're wondering what I mean by a 9 patch block, there's a WIP photo here. See my Christmas Snowflake set for more photos. EDITED... An updated photo can be found here with the correct dimensions for the HST squares.

Second time this working has happened, and in case it gets subbed I managed to get it first thing. If it's still out later I will try for a better shot because the lighting's all wrong in this one!
Still, pleased I got it this time, and how odd it looks!
Next time when I build an office I will read the material specifications..

The wrong side of the tracks; a poor or less prestigious part of town.
The expression, American in origin, comes from the idea of a town divided by a rail-road track.
In 1929 , Thorne Smith wrote ‘In most commuting towns…there are always two sides of which the tracks serve as a line of demarcation. There is the right side and the wrong side. Translated into terms of modern American idealism, this means, the rich side and the side that hopes to be rich.’

A class 101 DMU was working wrong line during my visit to Sykes Jct, heading towards Gainsborough, 7.7.88.
I accidently grabbed my 28-300 lens when I ran out the door. But i got several nice shots when the sun came out ever so quickly.

Sometimes the power and lighting is correct when you line up your shot, only to have the train lined for the lesser track. Such was the case here. This ED9 was out of Ayer and making good time, even with a pickup in Gardner. That's when the trouble started. I arrived at this location with plenty of time to spare. Then the B&M-era searchlight signal in the distance lit up for an eastbound. Bad news - that meant my train would be held at Tyter's, and I was staring at an hour wait. Good news - the light would be good for track 2. Really good. So of course they were lined for track 1, the slow track. Whatever, at least I had the correct leader. Taken June 20, 2021

I'm going home
(Buffy Sainte Marie)
Heaven isn't so far away as people say
I got a home high in my heart
Heaven is right where I come from
I never throw it away
I know the place and I'm going home
I'm going home
I'm going home
See up there it's not the same
They know your name
And I'm not ashamed to need it
I'm going home
I'm going home
You keep on a-knocking
I'm not coming out of this state I'm in
I'm traveling right, I'm gonna get there soon
I'm standing up praying
I'm singing, saying, "Hey-yo, ha-ha, hey-yo, ha, hey-ya"
I know the way and I'm going home
I'm going home
That's where the heart can rest
The best is there
And only a fool would leave it
I'm going home
I been around, I been to town
Hey, where you think I learned right from wrong?
I'm going home
I'm going home
Ils connaissent ton nom

Had my MTH111 mid-term exam this past Friday.
One part of the course is to submit your answers to the practice problems from the past three works. Unfortunately, I mis-read the online discussion forum narrative and ended up working on the completely wrong set of problems.
I think my instructor was more embarrassed than I was, as he had to explain my screw-up to me -- he's probably had students in past 'flip-out' over more trivial stuff that affects their grade.
For me, I'm more concerned with understanding the material than just a good grade. Ironically, my instructor was impressed with the quality and layout of my notes, even though they were all the wrong problems. He offered me partial credit for the quality of the work that I had submitted.
The moral of the story is that there is sometimes merit for being enthusiastically wrong.
