Hot shot CP freight #904 is leaving Windsor, Ontario with a nice consist, but with the wrong leader LOL . . . in February of 1989.
A hot hazy late spring day finds the typical collection of loaded coal trains tied down in Norfolk Southern’s South Yard at about MP 243.2 just west of where the Altavista District ends and it becomes the Roanoke Terminal District. But that is just the modern names for this line that was historically the property of the Virginian Railway. The VGN was a small but might Class 1 that opened in 1909 and was financed by the fortune of Henry Huttleson Rogers of Fairhaven, Massachusetts who was one of the richest men in the world at the time as principal of Standard Oil.
I won’t go into to much history but in addition to oil and pipelines (he first conceived the idea of long pipelines for transporting oil and gas) he had his hand in railroading as a close associate of E.H. Harriman. Rogers sat on the board of many of the great railroads of that era but arguably the VGN would come to be his crowning achievement that he financed almost entirely by himself. The road grew to 600 miles and was an extremely well engineered route designed with one purpose, moving West Virginia coal to tidewater on Hampton Roads in direct competition with it’s larger and largely parallel neighbor the Norfolk and Western.
Profitable and progressive the VGN electrified a 134 mile stretch of its mainline across the mounts from Mullens, WV to Roanoke in 1925. The VGN’s half century of independence came to a close in 1959 when the N&W merged it and on June 30, 1962 the wires were de-energized. But over the ensuing decades much of the VGN mainline remained an important component of the N&W and successor NS in continuing the task for what it was built. And, here more than a half century after the pantographs were lowered for the last time some catenary poles continue to support wires that span the yard here as a reminder of that earlier era.
NS 8099 seen here beneath the concrete arch Jefferson Street overpass is a three year old GE ES44AC delivered in this scheme as part of the NS’ 40th anniversary celebration that saw 20 modern units emerge in historic schemes representing predecessor components of the giant Class 1.

Adrian & Blissfield's turn from Mason, MI crosses the CN at Lansing in the charge of SD40M-2 821 (a former SP SD45) and ex-GTW GP9 1751. The crew will work the CSX yard here for the better part of the morning and early afternoon before heading back south with 821 leading and 1751 bringing up the rear.
Grumpy, Cranky and Dummy (Dummy is the one on the right obviously) try to shoo away a poor seagull, guilty of floating in the wrong side of the lagoon.

I am probably going to be posting a LOT of photos today. I am sick in bed :-( Not the flu, more like a stomach bug. Ugh. Dave is gone for a bit and I am tired of sleeping so I am going to try to catch up on some editing - extras and such I wanted to look at, and still TONS MORE Vegas photos!

I did TRY and tell him the little sheep track was not the right one. I could hardly keep my feet on the ground here! ( they always know best) so hence an out of focus ,quickly snapped peep around the steep side of the fell.....then back down the narrow track to get back en route!

We spent some time getting close to this rare shorebird in Barrow. It's fun to see occasional Asian species that have accidentally taken a wrong turn and ended up in Alaska for a short time during migration.

I was taking my daily walk when suddenly I came across this gorgeous golden retriever, (well, I think he is a golden retriever, but I could be wrong) and he was staring right at me.
So I went over to say hello to his owner and she gave me the opportunity to photograph this beautiful dog.
I then learned that his name was "Turrón". (That is to say: "nougat", a sweet that in Spain and other countries is especially enjoyed at Christmas.)
The Golden Retriever is considered an intelligent, gentle natured and very affectionate breed of dog.
As is typical with retriever breeds, the breed is generally calm and biddable, being very easy to train and extremely keen to please their master.
The breed is known to make excellent pets and family dogs, being generally extremely tolerant of children and keen to accompany any member of the family in a range of activities.
Due to their affable natures, the breed is often completely devoid of guarding instincts.
The Golden Retriever was bred by Sir Dudley Marjoribanks at his Scottish estate Guisachan in the late nineteenth century.
He cross-bred Flat-coated Retrievers with Tweed Water Spaniels, with some further infusions of Red Setter, Labrador Retriever and Bloodhound. (Source: Wikipedia)

Estaba dando mi paseo diario cuando de pronto me encontré a este precioso golden retriever, (bueno, creo que es de esa raza, pero podría estar equivocado) y él me estaba mirando fijamente.
Así que me acerqué a saludar a su ama y me concedió la oportunidad de retratar a esta belleza de perro.
Entonces supe que su nobre era "Turrón".
El golden retriever se considera una raza de perro inteligente, de naturaleza apacible y muy cariñosa.
Como es típico en las razas retriever, la raza es generalmente tranquila y dócil, es muy fácil de entrenar y está muy dispuesta a complacer a su amo.
Se sabe que la raza es excelente como mascota y perro de familia, ya que suele ser muy tolerante con los niños y está dispuesta a acompañar a cualquier miembro de la familia en una variedad de actividades.
Debido a su naturaleza afable, la raza a menudo carece por completo de instintos de protección.
El golden retriever fue criado por Sir Dudley Marjoribanks en su finca escocesa de Guisachan a fines del siglo XIX.
