While my daughter and I were out joyriding yesterday, this set of power stopped right next to our car at the Vancouver, Washington Amtrak station. The units were waiting for marine traffic on the Columbia River to clear, so the drawbridge would close. Rumor has it that numerous Canadian National locomotives have been seen locally on BNSF in recent days.
This young Opossum wandered into the backyard Friday very early in the evening. Not much bigger than my foot it was obvious from the beginning that there was something...wrong.
My wife and I agreed that it looked drunk. Unsteady to the point it fell over multiple times, wandering, circling, paying us no attention at all even when we deliberately made unnecessary noise. It's head was moving erratically and at odd angles.
At this point our concern was of course rabies. It's actions certainly ticked some of those boxes, however there was no drooling, no growling or agitated behavior. No noise at all in fact. No self mutilation. No obvious signs of any injury either. It found fallen seed on the ground from the feeder and ate without hurry.
When it tottered of towards an area of the garden covered with a net, already concerned and now worried about entanglement, we decided to gather it up carefully and place it in a cage we had handy and kept it safe until we could contact the right people in the morning.
Saturday morning found it "asleep" in the cage. We left a message with the Toronto Wildlife Centre (torontowildlifecentre.com) who replied promptly. After hearing our description they believed it could have a neurological condition from a possible earlier head injury. It was dropped off into their care later that day for further evaluation and care.

The power on the Waukegan Local invariable was pointed "North" as the Engineer on the job preferred it that way. When 703 left for inspection and 665 showed up as the pinch hitter with the nose facing South, extra attention from the local railfans ensued.
The disconnected rails heading into the weeds on the right crossed Spaulding Street, went past Jelly Belly and ended in a maze of trackage that seemed to serve evey little industry between Spaulding St. and Rt. 137. The C&NW also had a spur that came off the Old Line across Rt 137, servicing the same area. I'm not sure if the two railroads trackage actually connected in here or not.

This here is a hip shot fail. Why, you ask, would somebody who tirelessly ridicules hip shooting on the regz post a hip shot of my own? Well, I think it is illustrative of my disdain for the practice. First of all, the only reason I shot this from the hip is these two twin bitties are my neighbors. They know me, and recognize me, and I didnt feel comfortable shooting them on their way back from the eye hospital, so I chicken shitted out and took a sneak shot. Does it look it? I think so. It certainly isnt any good. Now I can rationalize like the best of them. The tilt is reminiscent of GW. The 28mm wide angle lens on my (borrowed) LEICA M2 is very suited to this "style" of shooting. I am experienced enough with this lens to have a good idea of what the camera is seeing, even as I am looking away, twiddling some nobs and pretending there is something interesting beyond the ladies.
The truth is, this is what hip shooting gets you: Nothing special. Nothing to really call your own. At best a happy accident, but in most cases, not even. There is no connection between the subject and photographer, because no connection was made. This topic is now open to discussion. Adherents to the technique please speak up!

On 31st August 1991 a Class 108 working the 16:40 Carlisle to Barrow in Furness service approaches Workington station. The destination blind has clearly not been reset as it claims the train is going to Carlisle. The set is in the seemingly normal rather grubby state for these services at this time.

1Y24 1211 Oban and Mallaig to GQS Scotrail service operated by unit 156492 goes wrong line through Westerton Station to Knightswood North Junction to gain the line to Cowlairs & hence Glasgow Queen Street High Level on time at 15:13. Better be quick there's an ecs movement 5Z06 1117 Polmadie Car M.D. to Fort Wiiliam service running 153 minutes late coming the other way and is probably held before the single lead junction to allow this service passage.
