Both girls cast a quick glance toward the corner booth. The man sitting there held a newspaper high enough to hide his face, but the dark suit he wore was unmistakable.
“I’m not sure if I’ve seen him here before,” Adrienne whispered. “He’s far enough away that I couldn’t recognize him even if he lowered that paper. I’ve certainly never paid attention to him.”
Kayla, angled with a clearer view of that side of the diner, kept him in her peripheral vision as she started on her meal.
They ate and spoke in low tones. When they finished, the waitress returned to check on them. Kayla said she was done. Adrienne added, “I couldn’t eat another bite. But please tell the man in the corner thank you.”
Kayla nodded and glanced toward the booth.
It was empty.
She scanned the diner, pulse quickening. “Where did the man in the corner go? He was just there.”
The waitress frowned. “I don’t know. He must’ve slipped out. He never ordered anything. Just paid for your meal and sat reading his paper.”
Kayla looked to Adrienne, whose eyes were wide, fixed on the waitress. “Have you seen him in here before?” Kayla asked.
“He’s been coming in for about a week,” the waitress said. “Same routine—comes in, reads, never orders. My manager was about to tell him he had to buy something or leave. But today he paid your bill, so… he let it go.”
The girls exchanged a loaded look. Adrienne thanked the waitress and reached for her wallet and started to leave a tip, but the waitress waved her off.
“Oh no, honey. He already tipped me when he paid for your meals. A hundred-dollar bill.”
Kayla turned to Adrienne. “We’d better go.” Adrienne slid out of the booth without argument.
Outside, Kayla murmured, “This is very unusual.”
Adrienne snapped, “You bet it is. I know you’re from another time, but this feels all wrong. And with everything else that’s been happening…” She trailed off.
Ten feet ahead, a man in a black suit stepped out of a storefront and onto the sidewalk. He turned deliberately to face them, blocking their path.
They froze. Same suit. Same build as the man in restaurant and still the details of his face were obscured by the bright sun behind him.
Adrienne tensed, ready to jump, but Kayla’s hand brushed hers—steadying, warning.
“Good morning, ladies,” the man said. “How lovely you look. I must have a word with you.”

Good morning. When I first started this series of bird photos taken in the snow I mentioned my goal was to get a few good shots of a male Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis), but stated I wasn't succesful as far as anything worthy of posting. Seems I was wrong as I hadn't uploaded to my computer a bunch of photos from a memory card I'd forgotten and left in the camera at the time. When I discovered it I was pleasantly surprised to find the above pic and the first one in the comment section.
The birds in the first two photos are perched in the same spot and branch coincidently. Most likely they're different birds since the photos were taken about an hour apart and the second photo while it was lightly snowing. In the above photo I couldn't ask for a better pose...almost picture perfect. The last pic in the comment section was taken four days later.
I hope you enjoy these pics of Mr C in spite of it being such a common bird when it comes to photos here on flickr, and I'll be following up with a series on the female Friday.

Le Touquet, just south of Calais, the morning after the night’s heavy snowfall.
Well, more zone blanc than zone rouge, you might say! Anyway, the morning dawned with a glorious sky, the air was clear, and it was satisfyingly crisp and crunchy underfoot – so all in all, a perfect and picturesque winter’s day.
Metra 216 leads the passenger special back east through Northbrook, IL. Very unusual to be able to shoot a Metra unit facing towards the city.
Mom just informed me that I was born in the wrong era. Something about all my black and white processing, I don't know... ;)

The sun has just set, and the Belt of Venus appears over the Mojave Desert. This oblique angle on a dry lake bed looks dull and flat. To see what's out here you have to get up high and look down.
Almost everything about Egyptian Goose is wrong. It is called Egyptian but its main native range is in sub-Saharan Africa, and in Egypt it is found right at the south near the border with Sudan. It is called goose, but it is actually a duck, most closely related to Shelducks. Its scientific name (Alopochen aegyptiaca) reinforces these mistakes as it translates as Egyptian Fox-goose. Finally it is not a native species in Britain but this is where I photographed this individual. It was introduced into Britain probably before the 1700s. It was first known as a captive species in Britain in 1678 and was breeding on the waters of several large estates by 1785. In Britain it is largely restricted to East Anglia and the Home Counties but it has spread to a few sites in the Midlands about as far as Nottinghamshire, where I photographed this. There are thought to be about 1100 breeding pairs in Britain but they have failed to spread like other introduced species, maybe because they nest in March when the weather is cold so egg and chick survival is poor. But they are also hole nesters (in trees or underground) and this specialised nesting requirement may also have restricted its spread. They are normally quite silent but this one was making the most amazing wheezy hissing like steam being released from an engine, quite unlike any other bird I have heard.
As one would expect on any trip in which I was involved, the sun only came out in Wales when we didn't want it.
I may have chosen the wrong pencil for a quick sketch of this ruined abbey. Nevermind, a new study won't hurt and can be added to my like of Yorkshire building studies. Drawn with a Staedtler Graphic 0.3mm pencil on an A4 cartridge paper sketchpad.
After yesterday's rubbish news, I needed a giggle so stopped on my way home from the gym. I thought of this spot a few months back but tonight's fog and relatively dry ground it was perfect. A one shot wonder too.

UP ET44 8011 leads two NS GE's across the CSX at State Line and leans into the curve heading into Hammond, IN. Obliteration of buildings in this area for the new South Shore line has opened up many previously unavailable vistas.
