Je ne sais pas pour les autres personnages, mais la dame qui semble montrer l'oiseau du doigt ressemble beaucoup à Juliette Gréco ; )

Another roster shot. In order to fit the 1989 and 1983 together in a prominent spot, the two diesels were parked on a tight spur in front of the shops. In order to get a decent shot of the 1983, a touch of elevation was required, and some careful maneuvering to get the engine in view. Thankfully, the back porch of a MoPac caboose helped!

All ALCO power fills in for ailing GEs on a White Pass and Yukon passenger train out of Skagway, Alaska.

In March of 1980 the Union Pacific ran a Director's Special across the Western Pacific into Oakland, CA. The UP Directors were inspecting the WP they were about to purchase. The 12-car Special was in Oakland March 27-30, 1980 and ran behind an A-B-B-A set of E units E9A 960/E9B 974B/E9B 968B/E8A 928.

Here we see the Director's Special on the return trip on March 30, 1980 at James, CA headed for the Feather River Canyon. I was a 16 year old Sophomore in High School at the time and this was my first real experience with chasing a train that large numbers of railfans were also chasing. I was with two friends and we chased from Oroville to beyond Portola. Having never seen anything like A-B-B-A E units on a streamliner before, I was stunned.

Back in the 1980 timeframe UP had eight E units on the roster. These were retained after Amtrak took over passenger service. UP retired all 8 of their E units later in 1980, but UP 951 was retained and then reactivated in 1984. As for the rest, 6 of the other 7 that were retired were scrapped. UP 928 was located at the Western Heritage Museum in Omaha where it was heavily vandalized. The shell reportedly now sits at the steam shop in Cheyenne in poor condition. UP later reacquired the 949 and 963B from outside sources and along with 951 were heavily rebuilt and enjoyed another run as leaders for business trains but only see occaisonal use.

This is a re-scan.
