Fascinated by the millinery trade, Degas made numerous images of female hat makers and buyers. This strikingly austere late work was continuously rethought and repainted over the course of twenty-five years. What began as an image of shoppers was transformed into a complex, poignant double portrait of workers. The figures are intentionally rendered with varying levels of fin-ish—the woman at left is more fully realized than her shadowy counterpart. Degas's process here was to continually reduce anecdotal details down to the looming hat stands and vibrant ribbons. The final product is thoroughly modern in sensibility, composition, and technique.

Two milliners sit at a dramatically angled worktable, their bodies partly obscured by the shadowed hat stands that crowd their work space. Seen as little more than a silhouette, the figure at right works carefully on a hat. Her attentiveness is not shared by her older counterpart who, though grasping a swath of pink fabric, appears lost in thought, gazing beyond the frame with a disquieting expression. The brightly colored ribbons--pink, yellow, orange, and green--draw attention to the drabness of the room and its inhabitants.
Over the course of about thirty years, Edgar Degas produced more than twenty paintings, pastels, and drawings of millinery shops. Among modern painters, Degas alone depicted this subject matter with such frequency. His voyeuristic yet empathetic portrait of the milliner's private world focuses on the physical hardship of their work. The woman at the left embodies the painter's concern; even at rest, her wiry body and pallid skin registers a life of hard work and meager reward.

i got my sewing machine back today.
it was packed inside a box with lots of styrofoam peanuts.
then i realized i can't actually use it, because i don't have anything resembling a worktable or a chair.
so… it's in the closet now, until i figure that out.

The is the south end of my room, my main worktable is in the foreground, I built the black shelves that sit to the back where the colored pencils are. The tall black shelf in the background is inaccessible because of the 4 rolling carts in front of it.

Hailstorm footage that didn't get uploaded during my unplanned computer replacement crisis. Today when I plugged the Flip mino shirt-pocket video cam into the MacBook Pro (running OS X 10.7 Lion) the holdover Flip site automatically downloaded a bunch of software for my new operating system. Didn't seem to work right, even when I set out to make a video for mp4 format that I've uploaded here before [see the Apr 27 rainstorm footage] only to find I couldn't get beyond step 3 of a 4 step process.
Eventually, I found a "Share" pulldown menu instead of the worktable "share" option. It works by giving Quick Time Player authorization to serve as the upload service.

Got a new worktable to home today. There were quite a many small screws, bits and pieces in that package to put together. But now it is set up at last and as you can see I am already dabbling there ;)
