Below is the village, Mishongnovi, one of the Hopi Indian villages of Second Mesa, Arizona. Mishongnovi, means “place of the black man,” is named for the leader of a clan that came here from the San Francisco Peaks around 1200. The original Mishongnovi village, located at the base of the mesa, was abandoned in the 1690s, and the village was reestablished at the current site atop the mesa. Coming up on an interesting landmark. Shiprock, a monadnock rising 1,583 feet above the high-desert plain of the Navajo Nation in San Juan County, New Mexico. This rock formation is the erosional remnant of the throat of a volcano that stood above here over 27 million years ago. Shiprock and the surrounding land have religious and historical significance to the Navajo people.
