Halloween is a big deal at my house; the decorations are already going up and sketches for jack-o-lantern designs are appearing on scraps of paper.

A nice afternoon and the windows are open and Dropoff couldn't resist all the wonderful outdoors smells. Gaston County, NC, USA. Canon T6i, 1/400, f8, ISO 400, Sigma 70mm EX DG Macro, RAW. 2/28/2017
It's generally a very quiet neighborhood, but about 2:30AM Friday night there'd been a short-but-loud vocal kerfuffle as a couple of unwelcome guests were leaving the house next door. Then half an hour later three cops showed up (with an enviably bright flashlight) to interview the owner of the house and his friend... not far from my open bedroom window.
I carefully screen every photo op, and this scene proved to be a good one!
View from my kitchen into TeeTa's dining room! It was incredibly difficult to get the screen to be in focus, because the focal box wants to take the biggest thing, not the tiny metal line. Duh, I never thought about holding up a piece of grey paper in front of the screen. [smacks forehead]
57303 passed Bayford at 0937 (16 minutes early) with 5Z25, the 0704 Abellio Greater Anglia service from Norwich Crown Point T&RSMD to Bounds Green T&RSMD, which was formed of GA mkiii set including DVT 82114. The DVT & the "Skoda" looked very clean, unlike the coaches in between!
Due to the train running early, I only made the shot by a few minutes, as the frost had melted & I didn't need to clean the windowscreen!
Another windowsill shot. I do love this particular window. It is in my kitchen and faces west, so the afternoon sun comes through fairly often.. when the season's leaves permit.
These are marbles which have been found in the ground around here. Some when digging in the garden. Some when I was a child and we played digging in the dirt outside the house.
Then there is my wind chime, and of course, a trilobite.
Why "of course a trilobite"? My family has always been fossil crazy. Living in Cincinnati, which sits on top of a rich Ordovician fossil deposit, we grew up fossil hunting on construction sites and in creeks or expressway cuts. Anywhere the vegetation has been removed, you find the bed of a 400 million year old sea.
In my family, finding a trilobite was the pinnacle of fossil hunting success.
When my mother died, and all six of us siblings gathered to divide up her worldly goods, we had no troubles, no bickering or tension. Until we came to the trilobites. There were six of us, and only four trilobites. Oh dear.
We ended up devising a complicated sort of lottery, and the winners walked away with a trilobite each.
This photo sat in my files for several months because I was not happy with the light on the glass jar, and several other details. Tonight I tried several different filters on it, and ended up falling in love with this simplified version.

...we used to leave the lights on to keep away the burglars. Now we leave the lights off to keep away the neighbors. My mom says it's because there's always a chance we'll like the burglars.

Actually I love our neighbors - they're the best. This was the view of our cul-de-sac the other night, through the window screen. I'm not sure if I like bokeh shots without any sort of in-focus subject, but I do like the colors. I'm looking forward to spring when the flowers come back. :)
