Installing a new copy of Windows 7 Home Premium, but after Linux. Should have been first, I guess.

Okay, so the tech media and the neck beards that make up the Fake Outrage Brigade (Anti-Apple bloggers) having been reporting a fair bit of hysteria involving stuff that's broken with Snow Leopard. The first target was CS3, which like CS2 actually works with the installation of Rosetta. Apple actually provides a list of incompatible software here:

support.apple.com/kb/HT3258

Of course, this hasn't stopped PC World from releasing their own list of software that have been reported to have problems with Snow Leopard. Here it is below:

Backup Bouncer, Books, Boxee, Butler, Camino, CheckPoint SecureClient, ClamXav, Cocktail, ConceptDraw Pro, DataBackup, Dave, Disc Inventory X, DiskWarrior 4.1, Electricsheep, Fallout II, Flip4Mac 2.3.0.7, Forklift, Fruit Menu, Google Gears, iStat Menus, iStumbler, Leopard Cache Cleaner, Leopard Cache Cleaner, Macromedia FreeHand MX 11.0.2, MailFX Pro, MenuMeters, Mirage, NodeToad, OneSwarm, PGP Desktop, Plex, Protector Suite, QuicKeys 4.0.3, RealVNC, Reader Notifier, Apple Server Admin 10.5.3, SmartScroll, Sonos 3.0, Sticky Windows, TinkerTool, TivoDesktop, Undercover, Vectorworks, WindowShadeX, WireTap Studio, and X-Lite.

The first thing that struck me about this list is the fact that most of these apps are actually tweak tools for Leopard, so of course they're going to have problems with Snow Leopard. Snow Leopard has been completely rewritten. Apps like Flip4Mac actually work fine, it's just that Flip4Mac was actually coded for Quicktime Player 7, so Snow Leopard will automatically search for Quicktime 7 in the Applications folder when you play a WMV video file. The problem with this is that the people at Apple moved Quicktime 7 to the Utilities folder. Unless you navigate Snow Leopard to Quicktime 7, it won't open the file (solution: just use VLC)

So PCWorld is actually being truthful by saying that Flip4Mac is having problems, but not for the reasons you might think.

And the inclusion of Macromedia FreeHand, an app that hasn't been supported by any OS for years, is just ludicrous. Macromedia doesn't even exist as a company anymore. It got bought out by Adobe in 2005. Me thinks that PC World is padding the list. Hey, but if you can't trust a site called "PC World" for Mac news, who can you trust?

But just to help out, let me reiterate. I've had problems with the EyeTV and Crossover Games. The latest version of EyeTV, 3.1.2, has been coded to work with Snow Leopard, but you can't get that version without actually updating it directly in EyeTV 3.0, which won't even open in Snow Leopard and the company that makes EyeTV, Elgato, doesn't provide a download for 3.1.2 (obviously because of piracy concerns) on their web site.

Frankly, the problem with EyeTV isn't Apple's fault. In fact, most of the incompatibility problems aren't Apple's fault. Developers have had versions of Snow Leopard close to two years running. Of course, that hasn't stopped the Fake Outrage Brigade at places like CNET from complaining about omissions in iSync. It looks like Palm OS devices have been locked out of Snow Leopard. No, they're not referring to the Pre, Palm's pre-eminent iPhone killer, they're talking about the old Palm OS, the one that Palm is slowly phasing out.

I mean, Jesus Christ, people, give me a break!

The bottom line is this. If you have a mission critical work flow that depends on tweaky apps like Sticky Windows, then maybe you should wait until those apps are Snow Leopard certified. I'm you're a casual home user, who uses Apple branded software like iLife and nothing else, then it might be safe for you to proceed. Make sure you install Rosetta if you have anything left over from the PPC generation.

If you're a Windows 7 beta user, Snow Leopard has a treat for you and that's Boot Camp 3.0. Not only does Boot Camp 3 allow you to read your Mac drives from Windows now, it also has official support on Windows 7 for all your Mac hardware.

Opening up his packages... It's the final day of the Marry Me Microsoft competition.

A couple of days ago, I linked to an article of a post by a Best Buy employee who was offered Windows 7 for $10 if he completed Microsoft's ExpertZone training.

In that training, there was a module with a lot of FUD about Linux. Now the Mac module has been released and while it's a little bit more reasonable than the Linux talking points, it's not by much.

Apple Insider has all the slides here:

www.appleinsider.com/articles/09/09/08/microsoft_unleashe...

Okay, they go through the usual points about price and games. No big surprise here. Of course, one of my main impulses for my Flickr account was to demonstrate that games are possible on the Mac. Of course, I say that realizing that Apple hasn't done nearly enough to encourage gaming on the Mac.

Of course, Microsoft's assertion that Macs natively run only 12 of the top 25 PC games, caught me by surprise. I didn't even know the number was that high.

The point about price is rather subjective. For me, Macs are worth the price just for the peace of mind. If there's a rare glitch in OS X, I am reassured that I haven't downloaded a virus. On Windows, your first reaction to a crash is that you either installed a bad driver or corrupted the registry, but most of the time you fear you've downloaded a virus or malware.

I've been messing around with Windows 7 for several months now and while I like it, and I haven't downloaded any viruses, I still have a bunch of tool bars that have installed themselves in my browsers. I'm pretty sure my niece installed at least two.

Windows 7 has also crashed several times, mostly after I tried to use drivers written for Vista. Okay, I know someone is going to say, "Hey, don't install drivers for Vista," but that isn't really the point. OS X wouldn't even allow you to install something that would crash your Mac. That's a big difference.

The price point also ignores the fact that Macs last longer and have a higher resell value than comparable PCs. Upgrades to OS X are also priced lower than retail versions of Windows and allow you to do a complete install, unlike the upgrades to Windows.

A couple of Microsoft's points are outright misleading. In the slide in the upper right, they compare Windows Live to MobileMe, instead of iLife, which doesn't make any sense.

They also make some points about hardware choices that have nothing to do with Windows. Microsoft points out in a slide I don't feature that Windows Media Player has a built in DVR and compared to OS X, this is a definitely plus.

Of course, they fail to mention that you have to have a tuner card installed to take advantage of it. Of course, there is an Internet TV option, but it doesn't work that well as it's still in beta and if you really want something that works, Hulu Desktop is the way to go.

Of course, Hulu Desktop is also available for OS X for free.

Microsoft also neglects to mention that Macs are capable of running Windows and OS X, which gives Mac users the option of installing just about every piece of software on the market.

Of course, the biggest omission in this comparison is security. Unlike the Linux module, Microsoft never tries to promote the old "security through obscurity" myth that seems to play so well with the PC crowd.

It seems to me that Microsoft would want to make hay of the fact that they have increased their security protocols. Of course, perhaps they didn't want to stress the fact that you NEED such elaborate security measures in Windows, which would make a lot of sense. Apple has eaten Microsoft's lunch with this very point in their "Mac versus PC" commercials.

Giving TweetDeck a spin in Windows 7. UI is much better looking than Twhirl.... which I'm about to uninstall. I may even use it as my main Twitter app in Mac OS X.

Microsoft tried to torpedo the success of the Japan Linux Symposium by launching their Windows 7 product that same day. They even had setup a big promotion booth across the street from the conference center.

During a break, we decided to make some fun of Microsoft and dragged Linus over there. When we arrived there, Linus was sold immediately on the product as you can see in the picture. At least that's what the sales guy thought. He obviously had no idea who he was dealing with. But in the end Linus surprisingly did not buy a copy. Wise man!

10-Foot HUD for Time

Lines for RAM and CPU meter,

This tactless command appeared in 2015 on the screen of my Windows 7 desktop computer during the process of uploading updates to the operating system. It's bad enough to be forced to wait around for updates to be incorporated (no surfing!), but being forced to read an impolite instruction like this one adds insult to injury. Without including the word "please" the message amounts to an uncaring command. I'm fed up with such ill-mannered communication, as described in gory detail in a photo of a carton of egg nog (see thumbnail image below).

Guess what? I ignored the message. In fact, I ignored it with prejudice! (I'm not sure what that means but it sounds impressive.) I boldly turned off my computer just to spite the craven idiot who approved the wording of that message. By doing that I was assured of getting even with the software author (and Microsoft Corporation). No doubt Microsoft's stock took a nose dive when word of my displeasure got around.

When I turned the computer back on, I discovered that the machine would not boot up. My computer repair guy got the operating system back in order, including the updates, but he had to do it on a new hard drive. The original hard drive was completely fried, making it impossible to recover any of 30 years' worth of data files. A lot of precious memories and important financial information was lost forever, but this disaster was worth the pleasure of disobeying Microsoft's message.

It's a good thing that I was under the influence of industrial-grade tranquilizers that day. I shudder to think about my behavior if I had been "normal."

I lied.

I'm sure that Keith will be shocked and stunned to learn that I've upgraded my operating system in work. I've jumped from XP to Windows 7, and I was pretty much forced by XP's reluctance to address my RAM and make the most of the multi core CPU.

The installation wasn't too bad, but I did have some nervous moments wading through all the pointless glass and aero effects. I needn't have worried. With an hour or two of carefully directed industry and a dedicated mind you can make Windows 7 look just like Windows 98!

Phew, that was a close call! :)

Here's my Macbook running the Windows 7 Beta release (build 7000).

Install was pretty straightforward. Just used Boot Camp to partition the disk, ran the Windows 7 Install DVD, and then used the OS X Install DVD to install proper Windows drivers.
