Wind sculpted branches of limber pines (Pinus flexilis) near treeline reach their gnarly fingers toward the sky. Overhead clouds flow off the Continental Divide, portent of an oncoming summer cold front. The trees that make up the transition from forest to alpine in this area are usually spruce and fir, but a fire in 1916 burned through this stand, and have been replaced by the limber pine.
The winds of autumn are beginning to howl, but from the wrong direction, as Canadian Pacific Kansas City's Herzog ballast train approaches Ornis Road on Wisconsin & Southern's Watertown Sub. The train is almost to Watertown after being loaded at the Michels quarry near Waterloo. When the train reaches Watertown, they will be back on CPKC rails, where they will set out the thirty loads and trailing locomotive due to a bad order isolation switch, then head back to the quarry for more loads of ballast.

…… Been a long time since these vanes turned in earnest! Norfolk is blessed with a few fine examples of these relics which is nice to see, this one is at Burnham Overy Staithe - a holiday let of course!!!! Cast your eye Northwards and there are now loads of off shore wind turbines generating electricity - not daft were they back then to harness this free energy!!!! Alan:-)

Have shot St. Benet's mill a few times before, but some new flood defence works have created some new angles there, including this one which I shot today whilst on a workshop my wife got me as a xmas present last year, which I finally got round to using!

It never really occurred to me until recently that this was probably one of the stupidest things I've ever done. Driving to an abandoned for winter national park without telling anyone. This photo is not even the worst of the roads I saw. If anything went wrong I would have been hooped!
