A crazy wind storm + some brave kids makes for some cool photos!

Siemens Canada announced that it will supply, install and commission one of the largest Canadian wind turbine orders from Samsung Renewable Energy Inc. The wind turbines for the K2 Wind project will be located in Goderich in southwestern Ontario. Along with the South Kent Wind project in Chatham-Kent, this 270-megawatt (MW) project will be the largest wind farm in Ontario, generating clean power for approximately 100,000 Ontario homes

The Wind Energy Technologies Office shared information about the latest in wind technology with the kids and helped them build their own (paper) turbines.

It's been a long time coming, but I finally decided to redo my pirate ship. I have always wanted to build a ship with removable decks so that figures can be placed below. I also decided to break one of my rules and create a set of custom sails for The Jade Wind to really dress it up. When all is said and done, I'm very pleased with the outcome.

Now for a little history...

The Jade Wind is a sailing vessel older than the memory of any of her crew. She has had many captains during her countless decades upon the high seas, and she is known for being one of the fastest vessels to sail the vast oceans that surround Galacia. Her current captain is the rakish scoundrel Luis Emerick. Captain Luis and his motley crew sail the seas in search of treasure, adventure, and opportunity.

The wind power revolution is well underway. I don't know how many of these things would be needed to really make a significant contribution to the nations power needs but they are indemic around my grandparents house and it's not uncommon to see the trucks carrying parts for new ones rolling down the roads.

This was made very quickly as an experiment into adding movement to a still image used in a video fusion project that mixes video and stills. The wind machine is obviously a graphic, but like I said, it's only an experiment. I'm also going to have a play with layered pan and scan, where a near field object tracks faster than the background.

You have to love wind power plants.

Heavy rain and windy conditions whipped through Western Washington on Tuesday, October 13. The damaging windstorm caused widespread outages throughout our service area.

Our crews work around the clock to safely assess damage and restore outages caused by tree branches and limbs blown into the power lines by gusty winds. Our Emergency Coordination Center and all of our local storm bases were opened to coordinate our response efforts.

Damage is assessed on Bainbridge Island as cleanup and repairs begin.

The is the wind I was riding in. When the the direction was head-on, my speed drops from 15 km per hour to about 7 or 8. It then occurred to me I could run faster than that.

And when the wind was blowing sideways, the bike was actually drifting. I followed the advise of a tour operator I met earlier that day to always ride on the side of the wind, so that when I get blown to the other side, it is onto the other side of the road, rather than off the road.

The sound of the wind still brought back the physical sensation of tightly gripping the bike handles.

Drive passed the wind farm yesterday on a very dull day but did manage to get a shot of a number of wind turbines. There are a total of 215 wind turbines in operation and is the largest onshore wind farm in the UK.

Phase I

In the first phase 6 MW, five German-made gearless VENSYS 62 wind turbines each capable of producing 1.2 MW were installed/connected with 11 KV HESCO network and started generation in April 2009.[3]

Phase II

In the second phase, 28 more wind turbines of 1.8 MW capacity each, supplied by Vestas of Denmark were installed to produce a total of 50.4 MW electricity.[3] This increased the capacity of the project to 56.4 MW. The project was completed in March 2013.[1]

In July 2013, Zorlu Enerji announced that its 56.4 MW Jhimpir wind power plant in Pakistan had started to sell power to the Pakistani national power distribution company after having passed all the required tests.[4]

Currently the privately owned Turkish wind farm is selling the produced electricity to Pakistan at a rate of 12.1057 US cents per kilowatt hour of electricity.[3]

Currently, 45 wind power projects of around 3200 MW capacity are under process in Pakistan.[5]

This is one of the two wind turbines on the very small island called Utsira outside the west coast of Norway. It is a test project that supplies 10 houses with electric power. In periods of low consumption, the energy is stored in hydrogen tanks that can be tapped when demand is high and production is low. It is an interesting prospect that could potentially be scaled up to supply large communities. The hydrogen can of course also be used to fuel cars. A blog entry for this photo can be found here.

This is my new winder for KAP. Even 800meters of kiteline fits onto it.

The inner tube is an extinguisher for water pipe. I hope it will be strong enough. The other parts are made of plywood. The white thing is the glue. All other things are recognizable. The handle is swiftable and has three length. I have already waxed it with bee's wax So it is waterproof by now. Fits into my bag easily so it seems to be working well.

WIT: Noticed this young lady around a local event and she didn't seem to be too bothered by the fact that the wind chill off the lake was -42°C. I was in a vehicle for a warm up when I spotted her again and just had to ask for a picture. Background post camera work was a smear to emphasize the wind.
