Our second game drive in Motswari and we were fortunate to see a pack of wild dogs hunting. We followed them for quite a while before they disappeared into the bush, so we don't know for sure whether they caught anything.
My Flickr friends probably didn't see this coming when I announced my ungulate series.
Here's a female wild burro (called a jenny) and her young foal photographed in Custer State Park, South Dakota.
These animals have roamed Custer State Park for nearly a century when they were first used as pack animals. When they were no longer needed as working burros they were released to the wild.
Though they were once domesticated, they roam free and wild now. But they do enjoy handouts from human visitors to the park.

My brother saw a wild turkey in a tree the other day. He and a friend were talking and they looked up and said, "What is that?" It was a wild turkey. They fly short distances and I saw one go from the ground onto the top of a 12 ft. fence, no problem. He was up and over the fence before I could blink. I was yelling at him, "Hold on, I want to take your picture." And, even though he wouldn't "hold on," this is the picture I took.

At Cabo da Roca. It is the most western point of mainland of Europe. It is in Portugal on the Atlantic coast west of Lisbon, at a height of 140 meters above sea level.

When you see wild turkeys out in a field, they look solid black. When you get a little sunlight on them, the iridescence in the feathers shows the real beauty of these birds. I would like to get a picture of this Tom showing off for the ladies next spring.
Challenging me. This yard is barely big enough for both of us. :-) We have managed to keep them off the deck and out of the bird feeders. Living in the wild now instead of begging for suet. This one lives in the hickory tree. That's like living in the grocery store. They're insulating their nests and storing supplies.

l am wild and free!! Wondering through the Soft tender wild lush pastures scorched by the suns warmth and light in their golden brown hues so tender glistening with the golden sun. Earths rich trees fade to the shadows blowing in the wind and air wrapped in the silk clouds. As the birds finish their final hums the sky's turn peach with light that transcends through out time and space moments warm the soul... I am wild and free.... Freedom resides deep within You!!

Thirty-fourth in the series ‘Wild Bonsai’, this tree is 30 inches (0.8m) in height and perhaps 750 years old.
'Wild Bonsai' is a numbered collection of photos of naturally occurring bristlecones (p. longaeva) generally less than five feet in height (1.5m) and - as nearly as I can estimate - between fifty and five-hundred years old - some much older. Most will have sprouted and survived in tiny cracks and crevices or miniature basins of sand and gravel. Shaped by the elements, flourishing tenaciously in the most minimalist of conditions, their lives are measured not in the millennia of more robust bristlecones, but in centuries...often mere decades.
'Duality', the cover photo for this album, is to me a matriarch of sorts and will remain unnumbered as a small token of a deeply intuitive and unapologetic respect that remains as transcendent and mysterious to me as it may seem odd to others. The essay that accompanies 'Duality' could, in many ways, apply as well to any other tree I may post in this series.
A perspective: Housed in the Tokyo Imperial Palace, the fifth oldest living cultivated bonsai in the world is something over 500 years old and is a designated National Treasure of Japan.

This is the iridescent rainbow face of a Wood Duck. Their attractiveness makes them popular in wildfowl collections, so much so that any seen in Britain are assumed to be escapes, but trans-Atlantic vagrancy is possibly if not likely in this species. Tameness around humans usually results in any rare ducks being binned off as escapes, but this was a wild Wood Duck in its natural breeding range in Canada. They breed in wooded swamps across large parts of the USA and southern Canada, but there are large gaps in the distribution too. They nest in tree cavities near water but will readily take to nest boxes if provided. I photographed this wild drake at the George Reifel reserve near Vancouver, where they are common. They share a genus (Aix: an unidentified diving bird named by Aristotle) with the Mandarin Duck from China and the two species are rather similar in shape and pattern if not colour. The iridescence is created not by pigments, but by refraction of light through a microscopically thin transparent layer on the feathers creating colours. Light reflects off both the front and back of this layer and the light travels slower through the layer causing minute phase differences in the light which creates colours. Miniscule differences in the thickness of the layers create different colours; purples or greens in this case. The same thing happens with a drop of oil on a puddle. Each rainbow colour is created by tiny differences in the thickness of the oil layer. But if you catch the bird at the wrong angle the colours disappear and the bird just looks black. That's why beautifully coloured things like eyes and flowers are named iris.
