The Bronx - Whitestone Bridge has been on my bucket list for years, and I finally got to shoot it last weekend. Taken at "sunset" from Francis Lewis Park in Queens.

Whitestone Bridge

The Bronx–Whitestone Bridge (colloquially referred to as the Whitestone Bridge or simply the Whitestone) is a suspension bridge in New York City, carrying six lanes of Interstate 678 over the East River. The bridge connects Throgs Neck and Ferry Point Park in the Bronx, on the East River's northern shore, with the Whitestone neighborhood of Queens on the southern shore.

Although the Bronx–Whitestone Bridge's construction was proposed as early as 1905, it was not approved until 1936. The bridge was designed by Swiss-American architect Othmar Ammann and design engineer Allston Dana and opened to traffic with four lanes on April 29, 1939. The bridge's design was similar to that of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, which collapsed in 1940. As a result, extra stiffening trusses were added to the Bronx–Whitestone Bridge in the early 1940s, and it was widened to six lanes during the same project. The Bronx–Whitestone Bridge was also renovated in 1988–1991 to repair the anchorages, roadways, and drainage. The stiffening trusses were removed during a renovation in the mid-2000s, and the bridge's deck and approach viaducts were replaced soon afterward.

The Bronx–Whitestone Bridge is owned by New York City and operated by MTA Bridges and Tunnels, an affiliate agency of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. With a center span of 2,300 feet (700 m), the Bronx–Whitestone Bridge once had the fourth-largest center span of any suspension bridge in the world. The bridge has a total length of 3,700 feet (1,100 m), and its towers reach 377 feet (115 m) above water level.

Taken through the window of a commercial airline shortly before landing at LGA in New York City.

This morning while coming home I was listening to a talk radio show,

It was about cancer prevention,

Please take a moment and see what this great city of ours has to offer,

My tittle is for all those people that have cancer or know someone with the illness,

The 3770 feet suspension bridge that connects Queens and the Bronx in New York City; about 120,000 vehicles use it daily. The toll is $8.50 cash that generates about $1.02 million per day, It was built within 23 months, constructed at $19.7 million, and opened in 1939. But the restoration in 2008 costs $286 million. That is how we spent the tax payers' money in every country while poor people are fighting in social media for no use and obsessed with basic needs.

I wanted to add some drama to the water and filtered a water effect in photoshop cs2. I tried not to get carried away to much with the effect so it wont take the beauty away from the photo.

The end of a cloudy day turned brilliant as the sun peaked out during magic hour and reflected off the clouds and the East River in New York.

...I was all alone on a beach in the Bronx for this shot. It seemed to be located in a decent area - and the sunset was lovely. I found it using my favorite two tools: (1) Googleearth and (2) my Garmin GPS. You go on Googleearth and think about potential photos.

The procedure is something like this.

1. Idea discovery:

Bridge + water + sunset in the west behind the bridge.

2. Location.

That looks like a potential place to shot. It is close to some residential areas. There is a beach. I can get all the way down to the water.

3. Finding the location.

I then find it on my GPS while sitting at the computer and add it to favorites on the Garmin. Next I select it to see how far it is from JC - and add 50% in case of traffic. I then research the area on the NYT page on crime in NYC from 2004-2006 (I think). It has all homicides.

4. Scouting.

When I go to my car, my GPS finds the exact location easy. I drive around the area some to get a feel for it. Is it safe? Do I feel safe? Where is it best to park? Any other angles?

5. Just wait for sunset - and then another 20 minutes for this nice light.

The best thing about this location was that I could see the Throgs Neck bridge to the left out of the picture.
