This seems like a lifetime ago but it was almost exactly five years ago (9-1-2021) when I delivered this windmill blade to the big White Hills wind-farm east of US 93 in northwest Arizona. The blade it was replacing had been struck by lightning and was hanging bent over when they initially checked it and by the next morning, it had finally broken free and was on the ground at the base of the tower. The crawler crane in the background would be lowering the hub and remaining two blades to the ground where the replacement blade I had transported would be attached in place of the broken portion.
I don't post a lot of images from my various work over the years but thought this might be interesting for some. I began driving trucks back in 1993 (I've been trying to "escape" ever since about the second year, I think... lol) after leaving a decade of radio stations behind (I returned again 2000-2002 but it was a dying media by then). I rarely have time to shoot images when in a truck and this was a rare occasion while I and my steerman (the person that steers the trailer axles at road intersections and within the various wind farms or blade yards) had to wait for the equipment to arrive to lift the blade off the trailer. I often miss the challenges of moving these blades and I did well with them but I make far better money driving winch trucks in the oilfield. Seems backwards to me but such is life, eh?
For those in the US, enjoy the Labor Day weekend and, if traveling, be safe. Please give trucks more room when passing and returning to the lane in front of them? The extra wheels do not mean we can stop faster and the modern-day sensors that tell you when you've cleared other vehicles are junk when it comes to safe following distances for a big truck. Everyone is always in such a big rush to be "first" in line or to arrive 30 seconds sooner or to pass a truck only to make a turn a half-mile down the road... Get off the phone or the huge distracting screen in your center console and actually drive with a brain, please? Thanks... Gripe over. ;)

Two P42DCs and a F40PH had a long train full of passengers and mail and express heading through the northern suburbs of Chicagoland.

When I first started making this series of images I really did think of them from the outset as a series of portraits. I did this because I wanted to make something different than pictures of objects... or parts of a landscape, even if these trees are those things too. So I considered them portraits, doing a bit of personification in the process. It is a creative venture but one that allows me to think of these trees in a different fashion. They are full of life after all. In that sense, you can also think of them as cities, or mass congregations of life. In the last two or three decades we have only begun to understand the teeming life found in such stumps and deadfall. They are homes to invertebrates and vertebrates, bugs and animals, flora and fauna. I have no way of measuring such a statistic but this old fellow right here may harbor thousands or tens of thousands of living creatures. We tend to see it as one thing: a stump, or a dead tree. But it is neither one thing nor dead.

Fun shot for a change. I was having lunch in a Subway in Folsom, Louisiana and while browsing through pics on the back of the camera I noticed this scene so I couldn't help but to shoot it! (Actually, tomatoes are a fruit!) :-)

Hippos battling on the Chobe river at sunset. At almost dark with just a few rays of sunlight coming through these two hippos had a huge battle creating an amazing silhouette.

Wow! I was deep in the woods, hiking at Graham Creek, when Janice called to tell me that an Baltimore Oriole was in her yard...I hurried there, and for several hours I would catch glimpses of this joker through thick oak leaves, occasionally making a momentary appearance in the open...finally, about four hours later, he decided to tour the yard, giving me great chances for shots! He's definitely a home run hero to me!
For the first few years WC power ran around in a number of paint schemes and getting a lash in full WC paint was far from the rule making catches like this June 17, 1991 view all the sweeter. 6534 and 585 leads train LO-34 west of Trout Lake on a beautiful summer evening.

This is definitely one of my favorites of the new batch of prototypes. These were some of the pieces that most caught my eye when I was rummaging through them at the shop last week--along with samples in black of what it looks like from both sides, as well as with the drum mag attached.
This is the "mystery drum" that you've been seeing on the JFLR--and it almost looks like it was made for it; it sure makes the JFLR--already a neat design--look several times cooler.
Believe it or not, it was completely coincidental that I posted an AA-12 mod just before I went to visit--I didn't even know he'd prototyped this until I told him I'd made that mod! :)
