C&NW RS32 (4241), another of the NorthWestern's large fleet of second hand locos, switches cars in this beautiful valley town along the Minnesota River. Since the 4241 started its career on the New York Central, I assume it was used to much faster speeds than it did on the "Alco Line." That is the mainline it is on in this shot. For those who are bored by the Alcos (and whatever followed them on the DM&E and the U.P.), New Ulm is the home of a creamery and the August Schell brewery, two necessary ingredients for any quality Upper MIdwestern town.

Whatever you celebrate this season, it is the season of light and hope. I want to thank you for all the time you have spent looking at my images and especially to those of you who always comment and make my day. You do indeed sometimes save my sanity.

I have had a little break. Not quite ready to be fully engaged yet but I hope that inspiration is something that will reappear after Xmas.

Here is an example of a not so perfectly crafted fence. Yet, it seems to serve its purpose and it definitely adds character to this yard. Whatever works! Happy Fence Friday!

I took a similar shot using my iPhone about a week ago. It was a magical shot - I wanted to see if I could replicate it or do better with a Canon 5D mkIII and Tokina 16-28mm lens (which is super sharp!). So I excitedly returned and took a number of photos with similar perspective (with equivalent focal length). I processed the best image (this one) in black and white as it worked better with the contrast compared to colour.

To be honest I think the iPhone version (which is in colour) is better and i'm not sure why. I guess it doesn't matter what camera you use, it's how you use it that matters. I guess it's good to know that something so portable like an iPhone can take such great photos I guess.

I'd be keen to know your thoughts?

Oh and also, the original iPhone version is also my most Favorited shot in my photostream - thanks everyone!

Blowing snow in sunshine..

Would you believe that the Arctic is a desert. Well it is!

With a scarce amount of rain and snowfall during the year giving about 300mm.

Due to the rather cold temperatures the air will not keep much moisture, and whats not up - cant come down.

Spitsbergen is an island, in the middle of the cold arctic ocean, with alot of mountains, glaciers, valleys and fjords. It's like a weathermachine, necessarily it doesn't need to be the same conditions in one valley as in the next.

Wind spring up easily and during the freezing season this creates often blizzards, in some valleys even sandstorms.

If we say that 1mm of precipitation (melted snow) is like 10mm of snow, it should give 1500mm (with variations) of snow on flat land. Oh ya. The cold and dry air and windy weather brings the snow away unpleasantly fast. Most of it is blown directly out in the sea, or filling up valleys and hollows. The scree is the ruler of the slopes.

Well ... alright, as long as you take good care of him. But whatever you do, Frank, do NOT feed him after midnight!

another analogue work

I think analogue works are full of memories, more than the digital ones. Everytime I take a look at them, feelings of that special moment, when it was taken, return... there is always more atmosphere, mood and memories in them....

Away from the crowds and the people grabbing my arms trying to sell me whatever, and down an alleyway and out onto a this larger street. Lined with push carts selling fried dumplings, noodles, all kinds of snacks, and a lot of interesting light and sounds.
