I wondered why the estate of Larz and Isabel Anderson was called Weld, so I did a little research.
Larz Anderson came from a wealthy family from Cincinnati, Ohio, but they were no where near as wealthy as Isabel's family, the Welds. I don't know if she was an only child, but she inherited $17 million when she was 5, in 1882. Her family came to the Massachusetts Bay Colony from England in the early 1600s. They fought in King Philip's War, the Civil War, and fought against the Pequot indians in Connecticut. They bought land from Algonquian indians in Contoocook, NH. They owned a fleet of ships that traded with China, railroads, and real estate. They have a close relationship with Harvard going back about 400 years. Former Massachusetts governor William Weld was from this family. They sold an investment company to George H.W. Bush's uncle, which was later sold to Merril Lynch.

Barry is an artist-craftsman in Huntsville who works with iron and steel. In this case, a gate is taking shape as he arc welds pieces together.
I stitch welded these pieces of 1/4" plate together, in an attempt to limit distortion, to make a bigger welding table top.

Description: A friend working on a welding art project. Needed to make a quick spot weld so lined it up and closed his eyes to get the small spot welded.
Very basic pressed shell that I have never had a use for. The very short ports are extended with a series of tubes, cut and welded to suit the port sizes.

sheet metal remember the laser samples? this is why we ran them. the rib needs a round on the corner so it will fit inside the bend of the pan. and the bend has a wider radius than the software shows.
Welded the threaded bolt to a stainless steel rod. After grinding and polishing, it doesn't look too bad.
the alignment is the difficult part.

These images were taken in the second full week of November 2014.
There's a big drop-off in activity on this site now. Some finishing touches to the river bed itself, cosmetic work along the riverbank sides, and a jig-saw pattern of large boulders placed in mid-stream. The main (final) focus will be on completing the profiles to the wall, securing with poured concrete, and then the completion with the pre-fabricated stone capping.
The guys have attached steel frames to the recess of the sheet-steel uprights, and filled with concrete. They very carefully check levels, laser-assisted. There's still a surprising amount of intricate manual work involved -- machines can only do so much!
The next step involves swinging in pre-formed capping slabs, with inset jacking points, and embedded rods to intertwine with the sheet-steel wall. Accuracy satisfied, the welder melds them together.
It's a race against time, schedules - and expected heavy rains and high river levels on the way.
The fume given off by welding and hot cutting processes is a varying mixture of airborne gases and very fine particles which if inhaled can cause ill health.
Gases that may be present in welding and cutting fume are:
nitrous oxide (NOx),
carbon dioxide (CO2),
carbon monoxide (CO),
shielding gas (eg Argon, helium) and ozone (O3)
The visible part of the fume cloud is mainly particles of metal, metal oxide and flux (if used).
The exact level of risk from the fume will depend on 3 factors:
How toxic the fume is;
How concentrated the fume is;
How long you are breathing the fume
