I work at Doug's place collision in Edmonton and have been wanting to do this for a long time now. The lights in the shop are all off except I used three trouble lights with 100 watt bulbs and a spot light on the ground just in front of the camera. I used my Nikon D90 with a Tokina 11-16 mounted to a tripod to shoot this.

  

This rock formation is called the Duck on a Rock. It is on the Heart of Rocks Loop.

 

I went to Chiricahua National Monument for a weekend of hiking, camping and adventure. I had never been here even though I had heard a lot about it.

 

The rock pinnacles, or hoodoos, which the monument was primarily created to protect, are erosional features composed of welded rhyolite tuff, which is volcanic in nature.

This forest of rock spires was eroded from layers of ash deposited by the Turkey Creek Volcano eruption 27 million years ago. Chiricahua National Monument is a unit of the National Park Service. The monument is located approximately 36 miles (58 km) southeast of Willcox, Arizona. It preserves the remains of an immense volcanic eruption that shook the region some 27 million years ago. Called the Turkey Creek Caldera eruption, it eventually laid down two thousand feet of ash and pumice, highly siliceous in nature. This eventually hardened into rhyolite tuffs, and eroded into the natural features visible at the monument today.

Flash welding is an electrical resistance based butt welding process used for joining components end-to-end across the full joint area. A range of section sizes and complex shapes can be joined (for example from bicycle wheel rims to railway rails). The parts to be joined are clamped and brought together slowly while a flashing voltage is applied. The process can be manual, but most welding machines are automatic or semi-automatic.

 

Where small contacts are made between the components, there is a high current density and the material resistance heats, melts and blows out of the joint in a shower of melted particles, giving the characteristic flashing action. This flashing progressively introduces heating and a softened zone at the component ends, while eliminating oxides and contaminants from the interface. After a pre-set 'burn-off' length of the parent material, a forge force is applied to the parts to consolidate the joint. This produces a forge butt weld with no melted metal remaining in the joint.

JARC provides training in the manufacturing and construction sectors, specifically welding and Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining. Trainees learn how to write code to operate the CNC machine to precisely cut metal parts. Trainees work on projects to develop skills and a CNC certification. Through this JARC works to address the dual challenges of pervasive poverty and industry skills shortages.
