Turning a gas cylinder into a stove

Since its early beginnings as the British Welding Research Association in 1946, TWI has been at the forefront of arc welding development. For instance, we developed carbon dioxide (CO2) shielding for MIG/MAG welding, making the process viable for welding carbon steel, and built the first solid-state power sources, paving the way for thyristor and inverter technology.

TWI has over half a century of experience in providing industry with engineering technical services, including:

High-productivity welding

Arc welding automation

Distortion control

Plasma arc welding

Underwater welding

Hybrid arc-laser welding

Oxy-fuel welding

Electroslag welding

Metal inert gas (MIG) welding

Manual metal arc (MMA) welding

Submerged arc welding

Tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding

Welding fume assessment

Health, safety and environmental testing

My first time welding two pieces of metal together. Not great, but I couldn't break it.

Welding in progress - taken at a local engineering works. I like the dramatic looping sparks in the centre of this shot, captured by the relatively long exposure.

New mount welded on. Required a new half curve, a new mount, and a new plate behind it.

I've been liking these 3M Bristle discs. 50, 80, 120 grit. Good for flat surface conditioning, removing mill scale etc. Jody Collier at Welding Tips and Tricks turned me onto these.

TWI is at the forefront of solid phase friction welding and processing technology. Active and innovative in welding research and development since the 1960s, we are responsive to industry needs and provide consultancy services to all industry sectors.

Support for industry includes: advice on component design, process selection & quality issues, troubleshooting, feasibility & pre-production trials, application & prototype equipment development.

TWI has been responsible for many key innovations and developments in solid phase joining; Friction stir welding was invented at TWI and was rapidly applied by industry; Linear friction welding was developed into a mature joining process for turbine blades.

I work at Doug's place collision in Edmonton and have been wanting to do this for a long time now. The lights in the shop are all off except I used three trouble lights with 100 watt bulbs and a spot light on the ground just in front of the camera. I used my Nikon D90 with a Tokina 11-16 mounted to a tripod to shoot this.
