1979 Porsche 930 Turbo

Ernst Fuhrmann adapted the turbo-technology originally developed for the 917/30 CAN-AM car to the 3.0 litre flat-six from the Carrera RS 3.0, and created what Porsche internally dubbed as 930. For the 1976 production year, a new model, called the "Turbo Carrera" was available (type 930, but officially titled "Turbo Carrera"). The car was a 911, but a very special one. It was turbocharged. This new model had the 3.0 liter engine, modified suspension, fender flares, and the most well-known trademark of all, the whaletail. It developed 234 hp and 246 lb-ft torque. It could go from 0-60 in 6.7 seconds, and cruise to 156 mph. The car was fast, powerful, and extremely tail-happy.
However, the 1976/77 Turbo Carrera was simply an intro to the "big" 930, of the 1978 model. In 2 years of further development, the car was upgraded into a 3.3 liter, intercooled, turbocharged monster that could go from 0-60 in 4.9 seconds, and allow the speedo needle to soar past the 165 mark. The 930 was now just titled "Turbo" on the rear deck lid. Sadly, 1979 was the last year for the 930 in America. The 930 was discontinued in the US due mainly to emissions requirements.
With only 59,000 original miles, this Turbo remains in fantastic survivor condition. The entire interior is very much original, including the factory radio and working sunroof! The car has had a quality re-spray over the years, and shines quite well. All exterior rubber and plastic is solid and free of dry rot, including the tires. Mechanically the car is very strong, the engine pulls as it should, and the turbo spools up very nicely. A truly preserved example!

Jedburgh Abbey is one of the four great abbeys built in Scotland’s border country during the Middle Ages. It was established as a priory of Augustinian canons around 1138. The brethren possibly came here from St Quentin Abbey, near Beauvais, France. The priory was raised to abbey status around 1154.
Jedburgh had a long association with Christianity, and a minster had probably stood on the site since the 9th century. During clearance work in the early 20th century, part of an 8th-century Anglian stone shrine was found, and excavations in 1984 uncovered a remarkable collection of artefacts, including the beautiful ‘Jedburgh Comb’, made of ivory about 1100.
The abbey was founded by David I. The Augustinians were noted for their contribution to royal governance, and their houses were generally located close to royal power centres. Holyrood Abbey sits beside Edinburgh Castle, Cambuskenneth Abbey beside Stirling Castle, Scone Abbey beside the hallowed place where Scottish kings were enthroned, and St Andrews Priory beside the headquarters of the Scottish Church.
Jedburgh Abbey served the royal castle in Jedburgh. In 1285, Alexander III and his new queen, Yolande de Dreux, were married in Jedburgh’s splendid abbey church. Legend tells of a ghostly figure appearing before the congregation and foretelling the king’s death. Alexander died the following year, after falling from his horse.
Augustinians were priests who lived a secluded and contemplative life, but who went forth from their cloister to minister to the people. Jedburgh eventually possessed about 20 parish churches.
Monastic life was mostly routine, but the abbey’s location close to the border with England inevitably brought it into the conflict between the two countries that bedevilled the later Middle Ages. During the Wars of Independence in the 14th century, the canons had to evacuate the premises. Further attacks in the 1400s were compounded by major raids in the 16th century. These and the Protestant Reformation of 1560 led to Jedburgh’s demise as a monastic institution

Rennes is the administrative capital of the country of Brittany, in France, the other historical capital being Nantes. It has a long history due to its location at the confluence of two rivers.
The eastern Armorican people of Redones founded Condate —an ancient Celtic word meaning confluent— at the confluence of the Ille and Vilaine rivers and made it the capital of a territory that extended to the Bay of Mont Saint-Michel. The name of the city of Redon also reflects that of the Redones. Early in the 1st century BCE, they adopted the Greek and Roman practice of issuing coinage, adapting the widely imitated gold staters of Philip II of Macedon, in the characteristic Celtic coin metal alloy called billion. Without inscriptions, as the Celtic practice was, the Redones coinage features a charioteer whose pony has a human head. Large hoards of their coins were unearthed in the "treasure of Amanlis" found in June 1835 and that of Saint-Jacques-de-la-Lande, discovered in February 1941. The Museum at Rennes contains a large representative collection.
They joined the Gaulish coalition against Rome in 57 BC, which was suppressed by Crassus. The following year, Roman emissaries were held hostage by the Redones, which obliged Julius Caesar to intervene in Armorica and suppress the rebels, and the following year to cross the Channel to discourage further support of the Redones by the Britons. In 52 the Redones responded to the call of Vercingetorix to furnish a large contingent of warriors.

What a windy place this is!! I was clearly very lucky to have had the wind abate somewhat as I came in to dock at the False Bay Y.C. here in Simon's Town on Friday - ever since then, the wind has generally been whistling around 30knots!!
But this is a lovely, really pleasant place with friendly people in & around the marina area. There are plenty of old buildings nearby, lots of greenery & flowering shrubs and the dramatic steep backdrop of stony mountainside, added to which is the view over False Bay itself, with more steep-sided mountains and small inlets.
After treating myself to a full cooked breakfast, I had an enjoyable meander around the main street soon after checking in at the False Bay Yacht Club where I'm berthed, chatted to a few people.. and then crashed out soon after midday, to awaken near 8pm!! Clearly, I was tired after my sail here.... I just managed to get a meal before they closed the kitchen for the night - and an excellent one, too, of fish & seafood - and then proceeded to stay up late chatting to people, being now wide awake!!
Saturday was another sunny, if windy, day & I decided to walk south a short distance to Boulder Beach where I'd heard there were penguins to be seen. Twenty minues or so later, I'd arrived at Seaforth Beach, a natural rocky cove with several small sandy beaches, full of swimmers and people relaxing under the shady trees and I was soon entering the Boulder Beach Marine National Park.
A boardwalk led through the shrub-covered sand-dune environment where penguins could be seen sitting on eggs (normally two) in a hole in the ground in the shade. It ended overlooking a large beach area with huge rounded boulders. There were hundreds of penguins, mainly resting, with just the occasional ones heading into or away from the water's edge. Many very obligingly posed close by for the visitors'cameras... I could have stayed a long time watching them, they were so comical & unafraid and
the setting was so beautiful. In the distance, out in the bay, was Roman Rock with spray flying over it in the strong wind and breaking waves.
Sunday I tidied up the boat, made my list of 'jobs-to-do' & looked at the watermaker which has been misbehaving - to find a filter-holder has cracked & needs replacing. I also had visitors in the afternoon - friends from London, Andy & Alison, who are staying not far away (son Thomas is getting married here in March. Being cruisers themselves, they've offered to help me with boat jobs and, being familiar with the Cape Town area, they'll show me around a little also - all very nice and very welcome.
My laundry has already been taken to Alison's brother's washing machine..!
It is so much more pleasant here, & safer to walk around here, than the area close to the Royal Cape Y.C. in Cape Town that I've decided to stay put, rather than move there as planned. My re-rigging can just as well be done here as there, along with my other jobs. In any case, with the strong wind we've had so far, moving was out of the question.
