"After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music." - Aldous Huxley

-----

So I was listening to some music as I ventured out on my afternoon walk, and after reaching the side trail that no one seems to venture I got a little too caught up in a dance walk that I didn't notice this branch.

Didn't notice it until it hit me in the face that is.

And with a slap to the face, today's photo was found.

I took some better photos today, but this one has a story and sometimes, a branch that smacks you in the face is better than a well composed image.

Hope everyone has had a good day!

The Face You Make When Dad Finally Nails a Joke...

For years, I have carried the proud title of Dad Joke Champion, despite overwhelming evidence that nobody in the family actually found my jokes funny. Then along came Laban.

This little Maltipoo has become my most loyal audience. Whether he truly understands my humor or simply appreciates the delivery remains uncertain, but this photograph captures the exact moment I told him: “What do you get when you cross a dog with a calculator? A best friend you can count on.” His reaction speaks for itself.

Captured during a perfectly timed yawn, Laban appears to be laughing so hard he can barely stay upright. Perhaps he was about to say, “Let me paw you a drink,” or maybe he just wanted to remind everyone to stay paws-itive. Either way, father and son finally seem to share the same questionable sense of humor.

As every dog owner eventually discovers, the greatest gift a dog can offer isn't obedience, tricks or even companionship. It's finding someone who thinks you're hilarious when nobody else does.

Fun fact: Dogs don't actually laugh the same way humans do, but researchers have identified a distinctive "play panting" sound that dogs often make during play sessions. Other dogs recognize it as a positive signal, and recordings of it have even been used in animal shelters to help reduce stress and encourage playful behavior.

Warm, rich tones this week with a colour palette limited to reds and golds with a tiny bit of green from the rose leaves.

I'm an analog medium format macro photography fan, because it brings a hidden world to life and is a good (as well as lazy) thing to resort to when the weather is bad. And as far as I know, the Mamiya-Sekor 120 mm/f4 is the only 1:1 medium format macro lens there is. That's depicting things 1:1 on medium format film. Sorry Hasselblad, but you are not there...

First print on my recently aquired Ilford MG Warmtone FB paper. 30x40 cm cut down to 20x30 cm. Looking promising.

This is from a German encampment. As I was working on the picture, it occurred to me that this might be some obscure nazi symbolism. After all, it's THREE axes. I can see one axe in the tree. But THREE? So I showed the picture to Grok and asked about nazi symbolism. Grok gave me a nice discussion about axes as symbols, but it's pretty much cross-culture, and there isn't any unsavory tie-in.

Grok also said it was a nice picture. So I got that going for me, which is nice. 😜

Now, I'm off to watch NASCAR.

My last print of 2020 is something from the wide open western spaces. It's a sepia version of an old print I've always liked and kept framed where I can see it often.

Winter Glow

A January sunset over Kelowna, where cold air meets warm colour. I’m often drawn to moments like this—soft light, quiet skies, and the way winter evenings still find room to glow. This is how I like to slow down and see the day end.

Southbound CPKC intermodal train I180 crosses Dawn Hill East Rd. north of Siloam Springs, AR on the rainy fall morning of Sunday, November 3, 2024.

One of my better shots taken during the best sunrise I've ever seen let alone photographed. This was taken on Shavers Fork (of the Cheat River) just outside of Elkins, WV October of 2022 right during peak fall colors for the area. Fog was thick and when the sun did break through, it produced these vibrant oranges and yellows, it was so cool!
