Wapping, London.
This was my first London Job. In total there was 13 of us, all Jack the Ripper enthusiasts (or Ripperologists as we are called) Many of them are authors of books.
We walked around the H Division looking at locations of old police stations that were around during the murders in 1888.
Wapping is one of my favourite areas of London. Once a busy dock, when the docks closed much of the area became run-down. Today it is one of the richest parts of London, with the old wharfes now transformed into luxury flats, but unlike many areas of London, the transformation has taken place whilst retaining it's history. The old wharfes are now beautifully restored, and the narrow, winding cobbled streets give the area a lot of character.

Have spotted the police horses a few times but this is the first we've managed to catch a photo from the front.
Such good temperaments but seriously alert horses - checkout their ears, they're listening for everything!
James McNeill Whistler

Judging by a sketch in the notebook attached to his passport, Whistler initially planned to paint a couple leaning on the pub balcony, looking out on the crowded waterway, but changed this to three seated figures, including Hiffernan and the French artist Alphonse Legros.
Her seductive expression and low neckline were modified before the 1864 Royal Academy exhibition, but some art critics were still concerned by the scene’s lack of a story or moral.

Whistler’s Woman in White: Joanna Hiffernan
(February — May 2022)
Many of James McNeill Whistler’s works feature the red-haired figure of Joanna Hiffernan. Her close professional and personal relationship with the artist lasted for two decades, yet little about her role or influence in his life has been explored – until now.
Today considered one of the best-known names of the late 19th-century Aesthetic Movement, Whistler moved to London as a young painter hoping to forge his reputation. It was here that he met Joanna Hiffernan, an Irish model who would become his muse, confidante and more.
In this exhibition, we uncover the role Joanna played in the artist’s career and discover how Whistler’s revolutionary paintings featuring Hiffernan went on to influence other artists from the Pre-Raphaelites to Klimt.

Despite the Docklands having high levels of redevelopment, there are still some areas which are still waiting to be redeveloped, such as this land on the corner of Pennington Street and Chigwell Hill, with a dumped pram.

The Western Dock of London Docks was closed and filled in in 1968, providing land for the News International site and housing in the 1980s.
Running along the southern edge of the old dock, the Wapping Canal is actually just the small remaining part of what was once a large expanse of water.

This sort of stands out on its own. I'm not quite sure if it was associated with the plant to the right or the left (out of shot). More research needed.

This was built in the 1930s as a liftable bridge to enable shipping from the River Thames to cross Glamis Road in Wapping and access Shadwell Basin. It is now permanently fixed in the closed position.
