Photographed in the 1980's before development ruined the area. By then, the docks had closed and the warehouses beginning to be converted to expensive flats and offices. The Oddbins sign on the overhead walkway is a portent of things to come.

Photographed in the 1980's before ruined by development. I loved wandering through these dark canyons!

The dog never seemed to tire of entering the river to retrieve a tennis ball thrown in by its owner.

The beach is made up of brick, potsherds and old oyster shells. Every item an antique!

This was my first London Job. In total there was 13 of us, all Jack the Ripper enthusiasts (or Ripperologists as we are called) Many of them are authors of books.

We walked around the H Division looking at locations of old police stations that were around during the murders in 1888.

Wapping Station has been closed since December 22nd 2007 and has been completely rebuilt as part of the East London Line extension project. The new station will officially reopen (limited service) as part of the London Overground network on Thursday April 15th. The station was first opened on the 7th December 1869 as the northern terminal to Brunel's famous Thames Tunnel. It feels great to see it shining so bright and proud in the year 2010! Brunel would be quite impressed I think!

Green Bank, Wapping. Roman catholic church designed by F W Tasker and completed 1877-79, with the arcaded narthex added in 1892.

Watts Street, Wapping. 19th Century pub retaining Taylor Walker livery.

The Wapping Hydraulic Power Station (built 1890) was originally run by the London Hydraulic Power Company in Wapping, London, England. Originally it operated using steam and later it was converted to use electricity. It was used to power machinery, including lifts (elevators), across London. The Tower Subway was used to transfer the power, and steam, to districts south of the river.

After its closure as a pumping station in 1977, the building was converted and reopened as an arts centre (the Wapping Project) and restaurant (Wapping Food). Exhibitions are held in the basement and the main ground floor hall houses the restaurant. Some of the original equipment is still in place. The building was designated a grade II* listed building in December 1977.

Cable Street, St George's. 19th Century stucco-trimmed former Charrington's pub, it closed in 1992. The crossroads in front was where John Williams, a seaman accused of the notorious Ratcliffe Murders in 1811 was buried with a stake through his heart after dying in prison in mysterious circumstances and being paraded through Wapping. In 1911, road-diggers accidently revealed what remained of the body and the landlord of the pub apparently took the skull as a souvenir.
