Wapping Station on the East London Line. One of the more idiotic proposals from Transport for London was to close this station, due it's narrow and curved platforms, or to quote "because of the challenges it presents in complying with safety and accessibility standards". Thankfully common sense has prevailed and the station remains open. Travelling south from here you'll travel through the first tunnel ever built under a major water way. The tunnel through which the trains now pass was opened in 1843 - another of Brunels' works.
Photographed in the 1980's before ruined by development. I loved wandering through these dark canyons!

Found this while wandering around London with SophieG* a while back. There were some stairs there, but they didn't look that new, and they weren't that great.

Photographed in the 1980's before development ruined the area. By then, the docks had closed and the warehouses beginning to be converted to expensive flats and offices. The Oddbins sign on the overhead walkway is a portent of things to come.
The Wapping Hydraulic Power Station (built 1890) was originally run by the London Hydraulic Power Company in Wapping, London, England. Originally it operated using steam and later it was converted to use electricity. It was used to power machinery, including lifts (elevators), across London. The Tower Subway was used to transfer the power, and steam, to districts south of the river.
After its closure as a pumping station in 1977, the building was converted and reopened as an arts centre (the Wapping Project) and restaurant (Wapping Food). Exhibitions are held in the basement and the main ground floor hall houses the restaurant. Some of the original equipment is still in place. The building was designated a grade II* listed building in December 1977.
There used to be a bar called Henry's in this location more or less. I can't be precisely certain where the former bar was located as it's been well over 15 years since Tobacco Dock was a functioning shopping centre, and I believe the interior has been largely reconstructed since as an events space. However, take this shot to be typical of the upper levels.

This was previously a canal here connecting the Shadwell Basin to the Eastern Dock.
It has since been narrowed, made more shallow, and is isolated (it is disconnected from Shadwell Basin and the Eastern Dock has been filled it). It is now a water feature, with water pumped from the middle to either end.

Die Stadtflagge ist gelb-rot.
