It's been a pretty spectacular couple of months for lightning in Toronto. Here is a virtually unedited 30 second exposure during an early morning storm on June 8th.

An early wakeup call and scouting the day before resulted in this photo of an adorable Least Tern chick. I arrived at the spot where I had seen three newborn tern chicks while scouting, well before sunrise. I started to creep up on one parent that was brooding her chicks underneath her. Beautiful dawn colors were painted across the horizon as the sun started to barely peep over the ocean. When a cute chick finally popped out from underneath Mom, I went for a vertical composition to include the spectacular orange, purple, and pink sky behind the chick. This is the first of many tern and piping plover chick images I’ll be sharing in the coming weeks. They are soooooo precious :)

The morning has come and time for the boats to go to sea, maybe...
Cleo wasn't hissing, but stretching out every muscle from a leisurely nap on my window sill. The yawn was just enough for effect!
At 1° F / -17° C, the first hint of sunlight highlighted hoarfrost everywhere. Light flakes of frost fell through light from our trees. A proper wakeup for me, at least, from mourning the world's tragedies this past weekend.

(Wikipedia states that hoarfrost crystals: "form on cold, clear nights when conditions are such that heat radiates out to the open sky faster than it can be replaced from nearby sources such as wind or warm objects." What of the noisy chickadees and nuthatches this morning? How do they manage?)

sorry for my "silence", but not at home these last days, but I'm still "alive" ! :)
