W&LE high hood GP35 #102 catches a little bit of filtered sun through the thin spring foliage at the Sandy Creek crossing in Oneida, Ohio on April 28, 2022. There’s been a busy start to stone season on this once dormant line that was reactivated a few years ago for this service.
Although very small and unincorporated, Oneida has contributed to Ohio’s transportation history for almost 200 years. It was on the route of the Sandy & Beaver Canal that was started in 1828 and this shot was taken standing on South Old Canal Lane. The canal was chartered to connect the Ohio & Erie Canal at Bolivar with the Ohio River in Pennsylvania providing a shortcut for minerals and agriculture of the region with the population and industries in Northeast Ohio. It didn’t succeed because of difficult geography in the middle section that crossed between Sandy Creek and Beaver Creek. There was a 3000 yard tunnel at the summit between the valleys. By 1850 the Cleveland & Pittsburgh Railroad was direct competition and the canal was reduced to short feeders at each end. The railroad through Oneida became the Cleveland & Marietta and connected with the C&P at Bayard about 6 miles to the northeast.
A predecessor to this W&LE branch was in service in the 1860’s and connected Oneida with Carrolton. It was named the Carrolton & Oneida and was so poorly funded that at times it was mule powered. It eventually became part of the Conotton Valley, a narrow gauge line that fulfilled the mission of the canal by reaching Cleveland by way of Canton. It is the present-day Cleveland Subdivision of the Wheeling & Lake Erie.
The line is a far cry from my first times seeing the branch. Then it was 5 day a week service with mostly box cars for the numerous brick yards that were on the line with NKP Alco switchers for power. It crossed the C&M at a tilt target controlled crossing about where the hoppers disappear in this shot. Now there are irregular 30-40 car stone trains with 3-4 4 axle road switchers making the entire 28 mile trip at 10 mph. It’s a neat rural branch and getting a tip from a friend that there would be a stone train that day was much appreciated.

WTM is a large beach with a few small islands. There is a sky tower for fantastic views, amazing surfing with little to no lag, a giant wave pool for practice, and a Lucky7 shop to get all your gear. With a large stage and some really interesting chilling/camping spots this is a fantastic sim for socializing. And, I might have seen gorillas, and a possible sea monster, but that is unconfirmed.
Amenities: motorcycle track, sky tower, stage, jet skis, large wave pool, paddle boats, interesting camp spots, Lucky7 Surf Shop

TP&W 2070 waits it's call to duty outside of Mapleton, IL on this warm & peaceful August 2019 morning.
A wild day on the Northumberland dunes meant handholding while crouching low. The mainly blue sky and middle of the day was also a challenge but early February light helped and I loved the textures created by the wind through the marram grasses. B&W best summed up things up for me.

N&W sits on the turntable in Spencer at the Streamliners at Spencer. This is prior to the current restoration. Can't wait for 5/23/15 when I get to get at the throttle of this locomotive.
