A part in a series of hand drawn mindmaps, diagrams, and sketchnotes from my personal visual thinking collection.

Timelines are by nature visual, but that doesn't always make them so visually inviting. I did this one a while ago for practice and to learn a little about a Bay Area landmark, too. Even from a distance, you can clearly see it is about the Golden Gate Bridge, it's foggy, and there's a blimp in the sky. A successful visual creates a very simple, yet clear, first impression like that.

This timeline was created on a 4'x8' sheet of paper and colored with crayons...which I quickly discovered are hard to photograph well. So, this one remains a cropped snapshot, not a bright and shiny digital image like I usually send my clients.

The first handout on iconic symbols for my Latin class.

The biological filter cycle for aquariums. Fish produce ammonia, which is consumed by bacteria that produce nitrite, which is consumed by bacteria that produce nitrate, which is relatively non-toxic and can be removed by changing water via bucket.

I had little problems with gel pens, but I already solved it with stylographic ones.

This is a version of the brain map with the correct technical terms.

Every Thursday at XPLANE we have visual thinking school, where we focus on getting better at our craft. This week we looked at the last month's work with a critical eye.

Yes, beer was involved. And Post-it notes and colored pens AND a speaker phone!

Planning session; getting ready for a meeting next week.

I'm doing a bunch of exercises to learn visual thinking. Here are some recent samples. We redrew the figures to make it clear that the group of friends together was making at least some overtures to the neglectful outsider.

The world is changing and we aren't keeping up. If we aren't careful we'll wake up one day and it'll be too late.

More sketchnoting practice, this time from an intriguing talk by Jane McGonigal about using gaming to solve real-world problems.
