The tiny village of Vik is directly below the volcano Katla which lies under the Mýrdalsjökull glacier. Katla last erupted in 1918 and is now overdue. Were Katla to erupt again it could melt enough ice to flood the town. Villagers practice evacuating to the church which is on higher ground,

Vik beach at 63°25′N 19°00′W means there is no land mass south of here until Antarctica.
All the way down there is nothing but the Atlantic ocean.
The 291 inhabitants here in the largest town for 70km or so could be forgiven for feeling a bit remote.
Luckily they've got a special lady for company, called Katla. A talkative lady, she likes to make her presence known every now and again. Not since 1918 has she really lost her temper though and it is her that creates the black basalt sands of the surrounding coastline.
The good folks of Vik have kept her at bay for sometime, when she does next blow her top the town will be wiped out, bar the small church that sits on the hill overlooking the town. Residents will literally look to God for sanctuary.
But it wouldn't be just them in danger. Ash evidence of previous eruptions have been found as far away as Norway, Denmark and Scotland.
