View to the East. Vik is a pleasant village on the South Coast of Iceland. In normal times, it's overrun by tourists doing the Icelandic circle.
The village of Vik is the most southerly village in Iceland. Vík lies directly south of the Mýrdalsjökull glacier, which itself is on top of the Katla volcano..
An eruption of Katla could melt enough ice to trigger an enormous flash flood, potentially large enough to obliterate the entire town. The church, located high on a hill, is believed to be the only building that would survive such a flood and would be a place of safety in such an event.
Offshore lies Reynisdrangar, stacks of basalt rock, remnants of a once more extensive cliffline Reynisfjall, now battered by the sea. The sea around them is wild and stormy.

Un lieu magique, une vue splendide, nous sommes bien sûr la plage de la ville Vík (Vík í Mýrdal) située sur la côte sud de l'Islande (Ísland).
Au pied de la montagne, Reynisfjall se trouve dans son prolongement des stacks nommés Reynisdrangar.
Une légende raconte que les stacks se seraient formés lorsque deux trolls auraient trainés un trois-mâts jusqu'au rivage sans succès et se transformèrent en aiguilles de roche au lever du Soleil.

A magical place, a splendid view, we are of course the city beach Vík (Vík í Mýrdal) located on the south coast of Iceland (Ísland).
At the foot of the mountain, Reynisfjall is in its extension of Reynisdrangar named stacks.
A legend tells that the stacks were formed when two trolls have dragged a three-masted unsuccessfully to shore and turned into rock needles at sunrise.

Dyrhólaey, formerly known by seamen as Cape Portland, is a small promontory located on the south coast of Iceland, not far from the village Vík. It was formerly an island of volcanic origin, which is also known by the Icelandic word eyja meaning island. The volcano erupted about 100 thousand years ago during the Pleistocene. The peninsula has an elevation of 120 metres, and the Dyrhólaey Lighthouse sits at the top of the formation facing the sea.
The view from Dyrhólaey is broad: To the north is to be seen the big glacier Mýrdalsjökull. To the east, the black lava columns of the Reynisdrangar come out of the sea, and to the west the whole coastline in the direction of Selfoss is visible – depending on weather conditions. In front of the peninsula, there is a gigantic black arch of lava standing in the sea, which gave the peninsula its name.
In the summertime, many Atlantic puffins can be found nesting on the cliff faces of Dyrhólaey.
The 17th day brought me from Flam to Vik! A very busy day with even more very changeable weather. Rain, dark and grey in the morning, then when arriving at Stalheim suddenly clearing skies (pics later), and after that threatening skies again. Soon after I had arrived in Vik, and had put up my tent it started to rain heavily, clearing up again to give me this landscape around blue hour. What I didn't realize then was that the good days were finally over, from this day on the weather was very unstable, and forced me to look different at my surroundings to see other sorts of beauty!
It is my favourite fjord btw Sognefjord, vast/immense and great sightings! Enjoy!
Lovely valleys, bare mountains and cold winds, snow packs, glaciers, beautiful lakes, and then there are the enchanting fjords that never stop to amaze. The most beautiful country of Europe, for me no doubt about that, with only one minor aspect, which is the weather. During my month of traveling I only had 4 really nice days, the rest of the time clouds, rain, and very changeable! Still no regret, and I will go back to make even more than the 3500 pictures that I took this time.
Another very active vacation that took me to the south west up to Trondheim in a sort of triangle between Oslo- Trondheim and Bergen with the whole route visible here (www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10153668247101759&set...).
We missed seeing the black church Budir on the Snaefellsness peninsula due to the horrendous weather, it was impossible to see anything on that day actually , even though we drove round the whole peninsula ! So I was happy to see the lovely church in Vik which overlooks the town and the ocean.

What a sunrise we had in Vik back in February. Sunrises occur just before 10am at that time of the year which allows for a lie in and some breakfast before waiting patiently for the light to slowly rise behind this wonderful church which is amazingly positioned high up on a hillside surrounded by higher hills.
