This is an advance copy of my first published book (one made by someone other than myself). The book will be released by www.charleslanepress.com in September 2011. Charles Lane Press was started by Richard Renaldi and Seth Boyd and they are becoming known for their immaculate attention to detail in the production of their books. Mine will be the 4th book they have produced.

A recent arrival, I'm planning on using this lens on a large format box camera project that I'm starting to work on.

I re-shot these cuff links because my first attempt was lame.
My girlfriend who is absolutely amazing and really helps me think about cool ideas helped to push me to redo it and this is what she suggested I do. :) I have an awesome girlfriend.

I attempted to put the eye and horn tip in focus with the nose softened just a little. I also tried to get the left side darkened to the point of silhouetting. Other than a little too much softening at the nose, this worked. I just wish I'd noticed that corner in the background.
I took these over spring break on a Calumet 4x5 view camera, and decided they weren't worth sharing (my fault). But I've changed my mind, so here they are. Shot on TMAX 100 ISO film.

The 121mm f8 lens barely covers 8x10 and a tiny trace of vignetting is apparent in the upper left corner.

My negatives are getting better these days. I have been working with Ansel Adams books, The Camera, The Negative, and The Print to get my processes down to a science. Some of the adjustments I made were a small front tilt on the Deardorff, and N+1 processing in the darkroom.
Camera: Deardorff V8 with 8x10 back.
Lens: 300mm Nikkor-W with no filter
Film: Ilford HP5+ developed in Clayton F76+.
Contact printed on Ilford MGIV RC.
Replaced 9/6/20 with a higher resolution scan.

Using a view camera is truly a thrilling and unique experience!
Lent to me by a friend,
I've only shot one roll with it, photos are being processed at the lab and should be with me soon!
Just finished refurbishing this Graflex Crown Graphic. Bare wood finish fresh wrinkle coat paint job, complete with swing modified front standard and a cool wooden tripod. Old brass lens from Kodak 5x7 camera.
its up for sale now.
My favorite creepy statue! I was playing around with tilt and swing, which led to light fall-off :)

Film.
Couldn't do an entire session of architectural photos, had to get in this one close-up of flowers
I'm 16 shots though my first box of 4x5 film, learned a few things, lots more to figure out.

4x5 for 365 Project details: greggobst.photography/4x5-for-365
Camera: Calumet 45NX 4x5 large format monorail view camera.
Lens: Fujinon-W 210mm F5.6 lens in a Copal B shutter. Yellow-Green filter on the lens.
Film: Fuji Super HR-T 30 medium speed green sensitive X-Ray film. Purchased as 8x10" sheets and cut down to 4x5". Film rated at 100 ISO.
Exposure: 20 seconds @ F22 after compensation for filter factor, bellows extension and film reciprocity.
Lighting: Lit from a constant light made up of four 25 watt daylight balanced CFL bulbs in a four socket adapter placed on a light stand and diffused through a home made diffuser made of white bridal satin around a pvc pipe frame positioned to camera right. Above the subject was placed an Alien Bees B800 studio strobe in a 22" white lined beauty dish with diffusion sock with just the modeling light on @ full power.
Development: Self Developed film in Rodinal (Adox Adinol) 1:100 in three reel Paterson Universal Tank using Mod54 six sheet 4x5 insert. 6 1/2 minutes @ 20 degrees Celsius with minimal inversions. Kodak indicator stop bath. Ilford Rapid Fixer. Photo-Flo. Hung on shower curtain to dry on film.
Scanning: Negative scanned with Epson V600 in two scans and merged back together in PhotoShop since the V600 doesn't natively support 4x5 scans in one pass.
I cleaned up my garage a bit and set up some lights as an experiment. In the back of my mind I have Yousuf Karsh as an inspiration. Obviously this is not there yet, but it's a learning process. It's very difficult to do self-portraits with large format. The focus is really difficult. I got lucky with this shot and the sharp field fell exactly where it should. The second shot was not; soft eyes and crispy ears\sideburns. To get the focus on this I draped a jacket over a hand truck which was about at face height and focused on that. Then after marking the floor with tape I tried to stand in the same spot. Like I said, it just happened to be perfect this time.
Flaws: Rim light is not strong enough. 40º Grid was probably too wide and the light was not aimed right.
A bit too much spill on the background, but not terrible. Not sure if it is coming from the key or the rim light.
Key light: Alien Bees AB800 with PLM 86, no diffusion fabric. (as shown in catchlights)
Fill light: Vivitar 285HV (not used)
Rim Light: Alien Bees AB800 with 40º Honeycomb grid
Film: TMAX 100
Developer: TMAX RS

Shot on a Toyo 4x5 with a Leaf Valeo digital back. 1 Mole Richardson 1K 135Ëš camera left through a 3x3' diffusion panel. 6 fill cards in the foreground around the camera. 3.2 seconds at F/22. A simple photo that was anything but simple to light.

Exposed for the negative so the positive is hot, but Polaroid originals are fun unto themselves. I clearly did not do a good job coating it.
It's missing a lens, but that and film are all I need to use it. Here you can see the front rise and fall adjustment and main focusing knob.

Latest stray that wandered in the door. Want to use it for portraits at least, perhaps some other things, we'll see. Not the most portable beast in the world, but at least it's not particularly heavy. Have some lenses that ought to cover and it came with a lens board (as seen), but need to pick up an 8x10 film holder. Also came with a 4x5 reducing back, so might get to play with it sooner than that, though...
