On June 16, 2017, I photographed this Steely-vented Hummingbird (Saucerottia saucerottei) at the Jardín Botánico del Quindío in Calarcá, Quindío, Colombia. In most of its range it lives between sea level and about 1,500 meters and forages for nectar at low bushes and trees. It was formerly placed in the genus Amazilia. It is a hummingbird of Colombia and Venezuela, dark glittering golden-green below with greenish to steel-blue undertail coverts. The garden's main site is a research and environmental-education center in a remnant of native forest in Calarcá.
I used a Canon EOS 70D and the EF400mm f/5.6L USM for this one, at 1/500 sec, f/5.6, ISO 1600. IUCN lists the Steely-vented Hummingbird as Least Concern with a decreasing population, and the garden, a nonprofit foundation, also looks after eight hectares of natural forest in the Barbas-Bremen reserve near Filandia and Circasia.

I photographed this Steely-vented Hummingbird (Saucerottia saucerottei) at the Jardín Botánico del Quindío in Calarcá, Quindío, Colombia, on July 17, 2018. It lives in forest clearings, second growth and cultivated areas at low to mid elevations in Colombia and northwestern Venezuela. Males forage on flowers in low shrubs and tree crowns, especially in second growth. The Blue-vented Hummingbird of southern Central America was long treated as the same species. The garden's butterfly house is a large open-air vivarium, home to more than 30 butterfly species native to Colombia. IUCN lists the Steely-vented Hummingbird as Least Concern, with a decreasing population.
I made this frame with a Pentax K-1 and the HD Pentax-D FA 150-450mm f/4.5-5.6, at 1/250 sec, f/5.6, ISO 800. The garden opened to the public in 2000, supports itself with help from the community and partner organizations, and has been a leader in ecotourism in the region.

The Red-vented Malimbe (Malimbus scutatus) is a striking member of the African weaver family found in the dense forests of West and Central Africa. Males are especially eye-catching, with glossy black plumage contrasted by vivid crimson patches on the throat, rump, and vent, while females are generally duller with less extensive red.
This species typically inhabits humid lowland forests, forest edges, and secondary growth, where it moves actively through the canopy searching for insects, spiders, and other small invertebrates. Like other malimbes, it often forages in small groups or mixed-species flocks, constantly calling with sharp, chattering notes as it moves through the foliage.
During the breeding season, the male builds a neatly woven, hanging nest suspended from slender branches—an intricate structure typical of weaver birds. The bright red plumage likely plays a role in courtship displays, helping attract females in the dim light of the forest understory.

One of the handful of fumeroles at the Hverir/Hverarönd Geothermal Area, Námaskarð, North East Iceland.
Hverarönd lies just south of the monster Krafla volcano and north of Lake Mývatn, the whole zone sitting on the mid-Atlantic Ridge. The mud pools and vents are easily accessible from the highway.
This is a reimagining of the black and white version I posted back in 2015 that totally sucked.

This early morning view taken from below the bird shows the descriptive yellow vent. We came across these birds in several locations and often heard them calling. This particular example was photographed in the hotel grounds in Northern Borneo.
