These vents - often thought of synonymously with the many boreholes throughout the town - were placed near the fire's origin in an early attempt to keep dangerous gases from entering residents' homes. The boreholes were not intended to vent, but rather were there for easy access to measure temperatures to track the fire's movements.

Sulphurous gases venting from the volcano deposit crystalline yellow sulphur and cook the basalt at the surface to form white gypsum.
The Black-vented Shearwater (Puffinus opisthomelas) is a species of seabird. The bird is 30-38 cm in size, with a 76-89 cm wingspan. Formerly considered a subspecies of the Manx Shearwater.
This species is pelagic, occurring in the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of California. It comes closer to land than most other shearwaters, so it sometimes can be seen from shore. It predominantly nests on offshore islands off north and western Baja California, namely Isla de Guadalupe, Islas San Benito and Isla Natividad. It is fairly common off the United States coast of central and southern California during the country's colder months.
It was a great day on the ocean. 42 degrees when we pulled away from the dock. We saw both Fin and Gray whales, common, pacific white-sided, Risso’s and Pacific bottlenose dolphins, and numerous species of sea birds.

The Red-vented Bulbul (Pycnonotus cafer) is a member of the bulbul family of passerine birds. It is resident breeder in tropical southern Asia from India and Sri Lanka east to Burma and southwestern China. It has been introduced and has established itself in the wild in many Pacific islands including Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, and Hawaii. It has also established itself in parts of Dubai, the United Arab Emirates and New Zealand. It is included among the world's worst invasive alien species.
Had to think of the hatch from Lost when i took this one.
Took my new lens for a walk. Found a used EF 28-135 f/3.5-5.6 for a good price. It has two small scratches but they don't seem to affect the images.

This institution opened in the early 1950's as a state psychiatric hospital. After the state closed the facility in the early 1980's, it was taken over for use as an "annex" of sorts for a nearby hospital, a purpose it served until the mid 2000's. Most recently, a juvenile detention facility made use of one of the wings. Now after a period of vacancy, the property was sold and plans are underway for conversion into a senior care center....
