This image was taken on a dark day in the Soho section of New York City. A Northamerican Champion camera(Diana clone) and TMax 400 was used.
Yesterday, walking between meetings, I took the opportunity to go past Vent, a fascinating street-level structure hidden away between Ave Maria Lane and Paternoster Square in the City of London. Later in the evening, the structure was being used as the backdrop for the news reporting of the UK Government's decision to ban the short-selling of shares for three months. It's only 100 metres away from the London Stock Exchange.
From the vent and the Square shots of the Square Mile (and a bit) sets.
Ventilation shaft outlet for the northbound route of the Blackwall Tunnel. Built in the MCM style in the 1960s using reinforced concrete and brick infill, it provides additional ventilation for the 1897 tunnel. An upgrade c.2005 lets the roof open up like petals for smoke extraction in the event of vehicle fire in the tunnel. Drawdock Road, Royal Borough of Greenwich, London.

The complex web of power, water, Net connections, surveillance and various other utilities demand that some heavy machinery be built side-by-side with residences in the City. Large exhaust vents, cooling fans and electrical junction boxes are everywhere, and an unwary pedestrian can find a unique way to get injured or worse around every corner.
Black-vented Shearwater (Puffinus opisthomelas) is quite a rare bird that was once thought to be a Pacific subspecies of Manx Shearwater (P. puffinus) www.flickr.com/photos/timmelling/52285057353/in/photolist . It only breeds on five islands off northern Baja (Guadalupe, San Benito East, San Benito Middle, San Benito West and Natividad) plus one (Isla Rasa) in the Sea of Cortez, and 95% of the global population occurs on Natividad. But the population has been badly impacted by feral cats especially on Natividad and they may have been extirpated on Guadalupe. There used to be thousands of breeding pairs on the three San Benitos Islands where I took this photo, but now there are thought to be only about 120 pairs. It is now classed as near threatened. I have previously posted flying birds www.flickr.com/photos/timmelling/52782755866/in/photolist and one that was entangled in cactus spines www.flickr.com/photos/timmelling/53741701172/in/photolist so I thought I'd upload this healthy specimen sat on the water. Not much to write home about I know, but at least you can see its black vent (below the tail). Its scientific name Puffinus opisthomelas prosaically translates as shearwater with a black behind. They are rather wary of boats too, so not easy to photograph, especially sat on the water.
