Day 31 of Gratitude

Saturday Market

 

The Saturday market. Love! What makes a market for me? The fruit, veggies and bread. Home grown and home made. Delicious pies, delicate treats, fine jewelry, interesting art and nice photography. I have always enjoyed supporting locals and now there is an area where we all can do this in a mass form. Markets will never be how I remember them though. They used to be all hand made, home grown, pay cash, get trinkets, gifts, touristy/local stuff for a decent price. Now I feel like businesses pack up and put out a table. Prices are too expensive, people can pay with credit, and it’s just not the same feel. The same atmosphere. I miss going to markets with $40 and buying things for me and others. Can Farmer’s markets still be called that when actual businesses and stores are selling their stuff at them?

 

Ok so I’m torn. I wish they were how they used to be or like how some still are – more artsy and less commercialized. But I’m still thankful we have them. How great it is for our community?!

 

Sorry if this isn't making a lot of sense, my brain is all over the place tonight.

 

Side note:

I made it a month! If I had realized that ahead of time I would have come up with something to represent being thankful for making it a month. Oh well Cheers for markets AND a month! I'm sure there's 31 veggies up there.

Jen (Jen's Photography www.flickr.com/photos/jenphotography/ ) and I went to Royal Oak Farm orchard recently and picked 1/2 bushel of apples (1/2 Ozark Gold and 1/2 Empire) so I can make some Jams and Jellies... So far I have put up 21 1/2 pint jars of Empire and have enough left over for probably 16 more jars. I have yet to touch the Ozark gold apples...

Price of the lunch meal in restraunt near the office I work is expensive in many case. So sometimes, I buy a lunch box (bento) from a bender (appearing only lunch time) and eat at a small park

The company I work also arranges catering service (delivering lunch box to workplace) for employees, so I sometimes order lunch box at an office. Menu of lunch box is of course listed by a catering service provider before two weeks but there are some situation that menu does not meet my preference. In that case, I go outsides of office and buy other vender's lunch boc and eat at a small park.

 

That day's main dish was hamburg and fried rice. Other side dish was scrambled egg, stired eggplant and mince by chinese condiment, and vegitables. Fortunately, I enjoyed this (above) lunch set.

This is romanesco. It is a hyprid mix of Brocoli and Cauliflower.

It is probably the most interesting vegitable you will ever see.

in japan, a typical "kid's plate" in family-type restaurants consists of ketchup-flavored rice with a flag, a hamberger, tomato-sauce spagetti, vegitables, corn potage, juice and a toy. i'm no more a kid, but it's always fascinating to see a flag whipping on the top of rice.

It was taken with Carl Zeiss Jena MC Flektogon 35mm F2.4 modified to fit Nikon DSLR.

Not fresh but plenty good.

I had to pull all the pea plants due to powdery mildew and (fusarium?) wilt. Got a good amount of peas outta them though. The mildew has spread a bit to the zucchini and pumpkins. Trying to keep it down though. Carrots, beets, and zucchini are ready for picking though!

finally, a photo of fireflies. usually, they observe more than 100 fireflies in shinobara. but this year, we could observe only few. local people said the number of fireflies depends on the number of shellfish called kawanina (semisulcospira libertina). kawanina grows only in clean rivers beside villages - they need people to chuck out vegitable debris "to some extent" and to cut off grasses by the rivers "to some extent." it's no longer easy to maintain such beautiful balance, but i wish i could see 100 fireflies flying shinohara again, living together with people.
