Here are photos from our monthly meeting of the Mill Valley Community Action Network (MVCAN) on December 3, 2017. MVCAN is an all-volunteer group of Marin residents who support American values and democracy. I joined this local political group in 2017, to resist the conservative takeover of our government and the Trump regime.
For this meeting, our guest speaker was Ben Wessel, Deputy Political Director at NextGen and an expert on community outreach and grassroots organizing. He told us how progressives won recent elections in Virginia by reaching out to young voters.
We then discussed as a group lessons learned in 2017, and what we hoped to achieve in 2018. We started with table discussions on those points, then wrote our individual goals on post-it notes. MVCAN team leaders then gave updates on what their groups accomplished this year and planned to do next year.
As our Events Team leader, I talked about the impact of the MVCAN Anniversary we produced last month at the Throckmorton Theatre, and how it celebrated people who took political action this year, as well as raised funds for our cause and engaged more folks to join forces with us.
I like being part of a community of dedicated citizens who share my values. Together, we can more effectively promote liberty and justice, as well as resist the Trump regime. Join your neighbors to keep democracy alive!

This was the best I could come up with for value. In real life it is easier to see, but my blinds and the angle they were opened at allowed more light to come in some places than in others. The ends are on the darker side, with the right end being a bit more predominant. The center is where the light came through the most, creating the lightest of shades before getting gradually darker as it moves out towards the ends.

1) This picture represents the element of Value. The different shades of red in the apples show this.
2) This photo was taken at Chudleigh's apple farm on thanksgiving. I approached this image when I saw the lightness to darkness in the colour.
3) I though I edited this photo really well and showed the colours change shades.
4) To improve this image, I could have tried to eliminate more green from the stems of the apples.
Emily Spivack has always had a love for vintage objects and a curiosity about their former lives. In 2007, she began her ongoing project, Sentimental Value, an archive of clothing and their stories that Spivack discovered while digging through eBay. Presented as part of Fashioning Cascadia, Sentimental Value demonstrates that each item of clothing you wear has a story behind it. Perhaps it was given to you by a friend, found on a trip, passed down by someone special — or maybe you were wearing it when something remarkable happened. While clothes go in and out of fashion and styles change, the memories associated with a jacket, t-shirt or pair of pants remain.
In the first half of this program, Emily Spivack will present stories from Sentimental Value, and in the second half, she will lead a Story Writing Workshop. To participate in the Workshop, bring in or wear one of your most anecdote-filled garments. We’ll discuss your garment, consider how to approach your story, and then write a short piece related to the item of clothing. Photos by Matthew Gaston '16.
