A flag must serve as a distinguishable symbol of the context and values of the county. This submission, the “Howard County Key”, accomplishes this while maintaining a visually appealing design.

The field of the flag consists of black, yellow, aqua, and white patches depicting the shape of Howard County. The black and yellow form a strong base. These colors are taken from the Maryland flag, in honor of the state. This retains some of the culture of the Maryland flag, which while often well-liked, is divisive due to the history of its design; therefore, the Howard County Key abandons the crosses and patchwork of that flag but retains part of the color scheme. The aqua represents the forward-thinking uniqueness of Howard County, along with its famous (and beautiful) rivers. The white tidily rounds out the design so that the yellow center portion approximates the shape of the County as viewed on a map.

The centered “key” is the combination of two overlain astronomical symbols (now often co-opted by astrology) that define the history and future of the county. The first is the symbol of Ceres (the ancient Roman goddess of agriculture) in honor of the county’s continued agricultural production (and a nod to the former flag). The second is the symbol of Minerva (the goddess of wisdom) in honor of the county’s importance to the nation as a powerhouse in technology and research, such as through the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (the county’s largest employer).

Mixed media on panel: "A Modern American Tomb"

Home Of The Brave features several works comprised of assemblage, in which each object carries significance on its own, as well as in relation to other objects in the piece.

In addition to large assemblage works, the exhibition includes a number of mixed media sculptures and screen-printed works on panel. Themes include American values, military, fuel, corporate branding, production and consumption. Repetition, numerology, currency and measuring instruments like rulers convey concepts of value and the passage of time. Pop-culture references range from fashion, film, musical and historical figures such as Native American Comanche Chief Quanah Parker and the iconic American Astronaut.

Exhibition will run from September 10 to October 8, 2011.

That's an awesome subway station.

Emily Spivack has always had a love for vintage objects and a curiosity about their former lives. In 2007, she began her ongoing project, Sentimental Value, an archive of clothing and their stories that Spivack discovered while digging through eBay. Presented as part of Fashioning Cascadia, Sentimental Value demonstrates that each item of clothing you wear has a story behind it. Perhaps it was given to you by a friend, found on a trip, passed down by someone special — or maybe you were wearing it when something remarkable happened. While clothes go in and out of fashion and styles change, the memories associated with a jacket, t-shirt or pair of pants remain.

In the first half of this program, Emily Spivack will present stories from Sentimental Value, and in the second half, she will lead a Story Writing Workshop. To participate in the Workshop, bring in or wear one of your most anecdote-filled garments. We’ll discuss your garment, consider how to approach your story, and then write a short piece related to the item of clothing. Photos by Matthew Gaston '16.

Brussels is coming back to what, coming back from where?

Beyond coming back from the pandemic, Brussels is coming back to the very heart of its values. It is back from a long gone future that we did not want to happen anyway.

Today, Brussels is becoming a metropolis out of the very depths of its essence. Brussels is natural, elemental, technological, at the service of its inhabitants and the world. Brussels is cracked and fractured, filled with bubbles of all kinds, like the best beers brewed along the Senne.

On Saturday 14 May 2022, TEDxBrussels *is back!* will explore such important themes at Brussels Expo (Palais 10). It will bring together citizens who are turning paradigms upside down by dreaming of a utopian world for tomorrow. A community that want to learn, exchange and create a unique local community within our capital.

The event will explore key issues for the future of our city:

- Green and climate transition

- Education and youth

- Diversity and inclusion

- Culture

- Governance

- Mobility

- Technology

- Security

- Housing & urbanism

- Employement

We all have within us the perfect Brussels, an ideal city that would represent a living place where our community can flourish. Come and explore it, contradict it, defend it and make it evolve together with our speakers. On this occasion, Palais 10 will be the heart of unforgettable experiences and a space for gastronomic and local discoveries.

Beyond an event, it represents an entire community that is reclaiming its city and helping it progress.

Look to the future, TEDxBrussels *is back!*

1. This image investigates value. It is reflected by the sky.

2. The subject matter of this photograph is the Richview Jr. Boys Football team lined up waiting for the captain to return for the huddle. I apprached this picture in this way because I thought the jersey color really stood out in the sun.

3. I think the colors are the most visually striking portion of this image.

4. I don't think I could improve on this image because everything looks perfect.
